how to achieve multiple headphone mixes...?

looking for advice on achieving multiple head phone mixes in x1. what's the set up and what additional hardware would be needed if any. looking to get 5 separate mixes.

i'm using windows xp pro with 1 presonus firepod for my I/Os.

thanks,
phil

for starters, you will need audio interface with at least 10 outputs if you want five different headphone mixes.      OR you need  a mixer on your front end that has LOTS of aux sends (at least 12 ).        i have 16 ins and outs using the profire 2626 and the Octane.  the software mixer that comes with the 2626 allows for multiple independent headphone mixes using the auxes.  i rarely need to use more than two different headphone mixes, even with bands with 5 and 6 members.  but its nice to know i can if i need to.

The most elegant solution is a dedicated headphone distribution amplifier with multiple inputs that each user can adjust to their own taste. Say your headphone amp has 4 inputs; you'd create 4 busses in the SONAR project and insert sends for each track that determine which tracks go to which busses. Each bus then goes to a separate output on your interface.

Here is an example of such a distribution device. This has a hub with 8 inputs, that feeds satellite stations over cat5 cable. I do not own this system, as it's too pricey for my tight budget (though nowhere near the high end of what you can spend!). But I did get a demo and it seems to be flexible and compact.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

The Firepod can output 5 stereo/10 mono mixes: 4/8 analog, 1/2 digit

Create 5 stereo Buses in Sonar

assign each to a different FP output

Add a post fader send to each track for each bus

Adjust each send for each person listening.

Of course, you will need 5 amplifiers, and 5 sets of headphones, and a bunch of patch cables.

Ditto most of the above advice. A headphone amp with direct ins to each channel will be one piece of hardware you need.

I run two separate headphone mixes set up as follows. 5 will just be an expansion of this...

Each Sonar track has 2 sends on it to two separate busses Cue 1 & Cue 2. Those busses are routed to separate outs on my mixer. Cue 1 goes to Channels 7 & 8 which  are panned hard left & right respectively. Cue 2 to Channels 9 & 10. That way in Sonar I can have 2 mixes set via each track's sends Cue 1 & 2. That's the Sonar end sorted

The mixer is set up as follows. Aux sends 1 & 2 are routed to two separate outs - Studio 1 & 2 respectively. They output to two separate channels on my headphone amp which can be selected from each headphone channel as required.

Setting up mix levels is then a combination of using the cue sends within Sonar for tracks already recorded and aux sends on the mixer for monitoring 'live' signals.

As already pointed out 5 is going to use a lot of outputs on your interface 10 in all plus require a multichannel headphone amp that takes multichannels if you wish to include live input monitoring.

    Hi Phil,
Here's how I do it. I have a furman hds-6 with a bunch of listening stations. The HDS-6 has 6 audio inputs, one stereo input for playback, and 4 mono for cue mixes. I take my mains output off my audio I/O and send a feed of it off the patch panel to the stereo input on the Furman (so I don't have to use up a separate output pair). I then take 4 more outs off the I/O, label them "cue1-4" and send them first to the inputs of an old quad effect unit that I've had lying around for 15 years or so and then to the cue inputs on the furman. Then I route whatever I want to those cue outputs from my audio devices direct monitoring setup.

This allows me to have artists in the studio who each have a headphone mixer (the Furman HR-6 boxes) with individually customizable headphone mixes. For example, I might have acoustic guitar on cue1, banjo on cue2, vox1 on cue3 and vox2 on cue4. Each player can then adjust the level of those instruments in his headphones along with the playback levels. Additionally, because I'm taking the cue outputs through the effects unit I can give them some reverb or delay or whatnot without effecting my recorded signal.

    Good luck
    Dean
