Midi Files all play at same tempo
This is really strange and this happens, even when I start a blank project. Every time I import a midi file, it plays at the same 100 bpm. What should I be doing so that the midi file's default tempo is used in MC5?

Check either Options>Global or >Project and see if there is a checkbox to 'import MIDI files at their time stamp' or something like that.

What ever the default tempo is set to is what the project plays at. I though it was default at 120.

I checked both Global and Project pages again, and there is NO check box to 'import MIDI files at their time stamp'. Every time I open a new project as 'Blank (no tracks or busses)', the project tempo is 100 bpm. Since that is usually too slow, I have to insert a faster tempo after I import a midi file (which is annoying). I also just checked, and if I open a new project as 'Normal', 'Hip Hop 1', 'Rock', or '16 Track Audio', the tempo is 120 bpm (not 100). I obviously, prefer 120, but why isn't it doing it with 'blank (no tracks or busses)' projects? Either way, the imported Midi file plays at the project tempo (not it's own tempo). So is this correct?

Yeah, I looked into that in MC 6 last night. That refers to Broadcast Wave files, and it's not MIDI tempo. Sorry for the red herring. I seem to recall that whenever I imported a MIDI file, the tempo changed to the file's tempo. It's not something I've done a lot of, though. I'll look around in my other programs on the other computer tonight and see what's up. Only have MC 6 on this box.

If I create a MIDI track, select that track and File>Export>MIDI to a folder on my desktop, then open that file in another version of MC or SONAR Home Studio, it will play at the program's already-set tempo. If I save the project to that same folder as a MIDI Format 0 or 1 and open it in another program, it maintains the tempo that I saved it with. Where are you getting these MIDI files? Are they Format 0 or 1?

This is probably happening because the 'Blank" template is set to 100 BPM and the others are set to 120BPM. Try loading the Blank template, change the BPM to 120 then save it back out as a template in your contents directory. Glen

Thanks Glen. That fixed the Blank template tempo to 120. But am still playing imported midi files at only project default tempo of 120 bpm.

Greg. Thanks for looking into this. As a test, I took a midi file (whose tempo was 135 when I played in a midi file player program), and imported this into MC5. It only played at 120bpm(the project tempo). I inserted 160bpm, and then saved as both Format 0 and Format 1 midi files. I played both of these files in the midi player program, and both played at the correctly saved 160bpm. However, when I imported either of these into MC5, they both only played at 120(the project tempo). I have tons of midi files that I've gotten online, and they are ALL doing this in MC5. So this confirms the results you got, which is that MC5 will only play imported Midi files at the project tempo. Then the only workaround, is to play the desired Midi File in another program, take note of what the tempo is, and insert that tempo into MC5?

the only thing I can think of is that maybe the MIDI files you're importing have a hard tempo setting in the EVENT list. look at the EVENT list for that specific MIDI track and see if there's a TEMPO entry.

So this confirms the results you got, which is that MC5 will only play imported Midi files at the project tempo. Well, that's not quite the result I got. Projects saved as Fomat 0 or 1 played at the tempo they were saved with. Tracks exported as .mid played at the projects already-set tempo, not the tempo the .mids had when exported. How are you importing them? If you're not opening a project and then clicking File>Open>navigate to the MIDI file's location on your hard drive and double-click it, try that. Can you give me a link to a MIDI file you've downloaded and which doesn't play right? Or the site you got it from and the name of the song?

Greg, you HIT the NAIL ON THE HEAD! There is a distinction between opening a New Project and THEN IMPORTING a midi file(which plays ONLY at the Project tempo), and just OPENING a midi file (without opening a Project first) which plays at the midi file's correct native tempo. So anyone wanting to edit a ready made midi file, should just open that file first, without opening a Project(to preserve the file's original tempo). Thanks very much!
