Which Acoustic Guitar VST do you use?
I was looking at Indiginus Acoustic Guitar Collection and do like the simplicity of use/price ($40). Also checked out Evolution's acoustic which sound fantastic, but a bit pricey ($179). I couldn't find any video demo's on this to see it in use. I read some good things about Real Guitar (Musiclab), but there seems to be a steep learning curve and I don't want to spend a great deal of time programming. Which sounds the most realistic to you guys and which is the easiest in strumming/picking patterns?

I bought the AAS acoustic guitar and decided that I would rather attempt to play the real thing.... its decent maybe for basic stuff but wasn't my cup of tea.

I almost bought that too Starise but after demo'ing it, I didn't care for it.

While the AAS Lounge Lizard is tres fab...their guitar emulators are not very good, I agree completely. Both the Indiginus and the Orange Tree Evolution are very good. But the Indiginus is somewhat easier to use AND is only $40 bucks. Tough to beat.

I use Indiginus for simplicity and Orange Tree Steel Strings for a full feature set. I find it easier to get something down quickly using Indiginus. I prefer to use the "strum maker live" option rather than the strum sequencer which has all the pros and cons of a step sequencer. The main drawback is you can only define 12 chords at one time. Strumming is straight forward. One chord assigned to one note with the down and upstrokes an octave apart. Velocity switching controls the articulations. Its pretty easy to bash out a part and clean it up if required in PRV. Orange Tree use a similar chord detection system to Music Labs so you get twelve different strum articulations for a very wide range of chords. Basically hold a chord down with one hand and the different strums are mapped to notes and triggered by the other hand. Of course it also has a strum sequencer. Both need the full version of Kontakt, Real Guitar is stand alone.

While you're poking around the Indiginus site you might want to check out their free acoustic guitar. It's a small (5.4MB) download, and really a one-trick pony, but it sounds good, it's useable and it's free.

Lately I've been using an acoustic guitar from Waves Factory. It's really nice for what I need. Plus the price isn't really too bad... One guitar library I've been looking at is Ilya Efimov's.

Geeze...there are just so many libraries out there now. And like the Efimov libraries above...so many good ones! I wish there was a "clearing house" site for all the available Kontakt compatible libraries...it would sure make searching for a particular instrument or sound easier. Thanks for the Efimov tout...love the Nylon Guitar.

A user at KVR gave a very fun & interesting way he used the strum engine of Indiginus: set the MIDI output of Kontakt to another synth (AAS String Studio ie..) and the strum engine will drive the other synth's sounds. I just might get this tonight. How would you set this up in Sonar? In Kontakt, do you set the MIDI out to port 1 or??

Indiginus does offer a free version of StrumMaker that you can try. I've not used it, though. I find pseudo-"strumming" faux-guitars awkward and unnatural-sounding. It's a lot easier to just get out a real guitar and strum it myself. I reserve the guitar libraries for stuff I can't play for real, like fast intricate picking or scorching leads. There is a dropdown menu in the Kontakt options dialog that enables MIDI output, labeled something like "send MIDI to the outside world". I've never tried it, though.

Since I had Kontakt 4...when I saw Indiginous and the strum maker I had to get it. Being a guitar player with a crappy sounding cheap acoustic, I though maybe......... but not really. It does sound good, and, if you are not a guitar player, it's a worth while investment, but a serious picker can pick it out in a flash as sampled. I also bought strummaker and the dulcimer samples. I don't use them very often but I have them if and when I need them. If you have K4 or K5, they are very affordable and sound good. One of the biggest problems to getting a guitar sampler to sound right is learning how to play it properly on a keyboard so it doesn't sound like a sampler played on a keyboard. All the cats in the demo's on the websites pretty much have mastered that technique well enough to make a convincing video to encourage you to buy the product. I guess if you have respectable keyboard chops, it would not be too hard to learn, however, if you are not a keyboard player, making it sound real would be a bit harder..... just a guess.

What is it that they actually do to making it sound "real"? (Eventhough I primarily play the guitar, I still like to use software/MIDI (especially if it has somthing of interest and quality) and this makes it easier to record when everyone's in bed.....I don't have the luxury of a sound proofed room). You would think that the effort they put into recording the original instruments was THE key to making it sound realistic and avoid having to do serious programming to accomplish this.

These emulations have most if not all common articulations built in via velocity or key switching plus they have built in pre figured "strums" and strum patterns you can choose from and/or play with single keys. For some things they are quite amazing.

The best sounding I have are the ones in EWQL Gypsy and RA. Ironically I trigger them with a MIDI guitar. I have quite a few others but they all sound like harpsichord to me

If you just trigger them straight from MIDI they will sound fake. You must learn how to put the nuances that a real guitar player would do subconsciously, into the music for it to sound real. Don't ask me how to do that because I'm not THAT adept with midi programming. Velocity, aftertouch, and probably the most important is playing technique... how you play the notes. You have to be able to emulate a guitarist finger picking the notes. Fail to get it right and it does sound like a midi harpsichord. Watch the video demo's at Real Strat and Real guitar and even Idiginous and watch the fingers and see what they do.

Here's a video by Geert Bevin, playing Evolution Acoustic Guitar through his Eigenharp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oihkibWc3E8 While it uses a strum palette system instead of strum patterns, I'm going to be adding the ability to having strumming patterns as well as strum keys in the Kontakt 4 update. If you have any questions about EAG Steel Strings, just let me know!

Hi Greg, If I were to purchase EAG today, would the strumming pattern updates be included when it's released? or would it be part of a new product you're releasing?

Yeah, the strumming pattern system would be included in the update when it's released. This is a free update for all owners of the Evolution electric and acoustic guitars, and features an entirely new script / interface for better playability, realism, and ease of use.

I personally think RealGuitar is the best. I think it sounds real. The strums are great and very convincing and so is picking. Solo is great too if you know how to play a guitar. All my music (see my sig) is made with RealGuitar (plus RealStrat and RealPC). And most of my guitartracks (specially the acoustic ones) were done fast and the easy way. It isn't complicated at all. But if you want to, you can add all kinds of stuff to make it even more convincing. (I am just too lazy for that... ;) ). EDIT The start of Stream of grace has a simple acoustic rhythm part. That part is a very basic pattern (selfmade) that's repeated over and over. When you would play the RealGuitar live you can make it sound even better. BTW I never ever use patterns, I always make my own. Very easy to do in Sonar. EDIT 2 Some more examples: Write the book (completely acoustic) or Glass (again: it all could have been better if I hadn't used selfmade patterns... ).

Just my take, but I sold my copy of RealGuitar after Evolution Acoustic Guitar came out. Listen to the Evolution Acoustic Guitar demos ( http://www.orangetreesamp...-guitar-steel-strings) and RealGuitar and I think you can here a dramatic difference between these two products in terms of the tone of the guitars and realism. The underlying samples used in RealGuitar just didn't sound that nice to my ears. I don't know if the problem is a cheap guitar, mics, recording techniques or a combination of all of that, but whatever it is, RealGuitar just doesn't have the kind of beautiful tone that EAG has (or Illya's nylon guitar for that matter, which I don't own, but sounds really nice in the demos).
