New Sound Card Not Working

i installed a new PCI sound card to replace my on-board audio.  it uses WDM drivers that came on
a CD.  when i switch the driver type in HS, the audio test says only at 48kHz works, which i guess is
fine.  then i get an error, saying

"the following drivers either do not support the current audio format or are in use by another prgram.  Please choose whether you want to disable them or use them anyway.

Envy24 Family Audio (WDM) 1/2
Envy24 Family Audio (WDM) 3/4
Envy24 Family Audio (WDM) 5/6
Envy24 Family Audio (WDM) "

any idea what's going on?  btw, i did disable the on-board audio via device manager.  and the card works for other audio feeds, like iTunes.

what is an Envy24?  what kind of soundcard is it?

try ASIO mode instead and see if that works.

Envy24 is an audio chipset on the 24-bit 5 Channel Low Profile PCI Sound Adapter Card.

tried ASIO, but didn't work.  most of the tabs for drivers automatically are set WDM.

ok, but what is the make and model fo the PCI soundcard?

and I don't understand what you mean by "most of the tabs for drivers are automatically set WDM" - that's only if you're in WDM mode.  if you change to ASIO those go away and are replaced with ASIO I/O

the card is by StarTech.com (PCISOUND5LP)

when i set drivers to ASIO, there are no driver-related options to choose from.  you think i could download ASIO drivers for this card even tho it came with WDM drivers?

it depends on if the manufacturer wrote them or not.  for a startech card, I doubt there are ASIO drivers.

Startech cards are not designed for recording, I hope you didn't spend a lot of money on this card hoping it would do better than the sigmatel.

if you are in WDM driver mode, and run the WAVE PROFILER, it only comes up with 48k sampling rate?  no 44.1kHz?  that's really odd that it wouldn't have 44.1.  soundblasters used to do only 48k, but they changed that years ago.  since CD redbook is 44.1, that's what everyone has been using as a base for a long time.

    several things:
make sure you don't have itunes running (even in the background - itunes tends to run in the background all the time - I hate itunes and it will not ever be on my DAW)
make sure you have all programs except SHS7 closed - not an internet browser, not mail, definitely not any media players
make sure you have your project sampling rate set to 48k if that's the only sampling rate that the card will use.

i set the drivers to MME, and now my project is exporting without drop out.  i think my project put my computer to its limits, and wasn't sure if it was the CPU, amount of RAM, or sound card.  seems this sound card boosted things just enough.

    thanks.

There is a bug in SHS7 that prevents it from properly identifying the capabilities of the sound cards from some manufacturers.  I would recommend trying ASIO4ALL as a WDM wrapper (then selecting ASIO mode in SHS7) over trying to use MME mode.  ASIO4ALL seems to be better at identifying and using WDM sound cards than the Cakewalk WDM interface.  ASIO4ALL works MUCH better than MME in my opinion.
