It's nice to see Cake catching up to some other DAWs in this area. And, I like the approach. At least from what I can tell watching the video, it looks like it's smartly and well done. I'm still not using X1 on a daily basis, but down the road I will be (I'm sure). This addition adds to the desire to do so.

Interesting... Will it pop up the visual of each FX as it does in the video or is that simply a presentation image for the video? That would make it a lot more attractive to me it accessing a knob made it's plugin/parameter visible while tweaking it... ;-) Keni

Are these chain GUIs ACT controllable? Or only the plugs "behind" it as usual...?

I'm pretty sure I saw a baker say they are ACT-able a while ago EDIT to add: Just started wathcing the video and one of the first things they mention is ACT control

Does this have any type of metering options for trim-gain, compressors in-out-reduction, etc..?

FXChains are fully ACT controllable and you have input and output gain control over ever chain. They are a new way of using effects - its like designing your own plugin built from any arbitrary chain of plugins. In the chain GUI you can add up to 6 knobs and 6 buttons that control parameters any of the plugins in the chain. All the parameters are automatable and act controllable including the input gain and the output gain controls. Once a chain is set up this way in SONAR it behaves like a single plugin with its own fully automatable parameters. You can even give the parameters your own names. Its can be pretty powerful once you get into it since you now think of entire chains of effects as a single sound.

Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk ] They are a new way of using effects. As long as you haven't been using Combinators in Reason within the last 7 years... So here, as it is in Reason, is it possible to assign one control to perform simultaneous functions on more than one plug-in, say like increasing the gain on a saturator whilst reducing the threshold on a seperate compressor and still control the amount of boost on a curve on yet another eq? It looks like this just pulls a single controls from the plug-ins so you can lay out these chosen controls on another panel. One of the beauties of Combinators is that you can create this kind of interdependance between several FX (and instruments for that matter) from one control. That's a bit of a disappointment to me.

By that measure you might say its the same thing as a combi on a Roland hardware synth. This wasn't influenced by Reason but was a natural extension of what we had planned when we did FXChains 1. AFIK Reason only does this with its built in effects while this works with any any plugins that SONAR can use VST/DX. Regarding multi-param control this is not yet available in FXChains 2 but is being considered for the future. The architecture definitely supports it.

No I wasn't suggesting it was a copy, just trying to clarify the concept. I was just hoping for the multi-param control. Yes Reason only works with it's own full suite of FX, that's why I was looking forward to this as being a breakthrough. I mean I agree proprietary FX are a bit of a bind ain't they?... So multi-param on VST/DX would have been really exciting. This just looks like being able to alter the ergonomics of the seperate plug-ins a little.

We'd originally planned for multi-param control and totally understand the need for it. It was too much to do within the scope of this update unfortunately. FX chains 2 in itself was quite a huge effort - there is a lot going on behind the scenes to make it happen. Editing mixing, UI, new commands etc.

It does bear similarity to Reason, but Live also has the ability to combine multiple effects with some macro knobs. I think it's a sign of things to come DAW-wide. The skinning is hopefully a sign of things to come too!

Well, FXC 2 is enough reason to buy expanded. I wonder when there is Sonar X2, the upgrade price will be different for X1 normal users vs X1 expanded users? My question answered in the positive would make this a NO BRAINER? Jim
