Joni Mitchell Cover tune

One of my favorite albums of all time is Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark.  And this tune is just so much fun, I've wanted to do it for a long time.  I finally got around to it.

Joni has been one of my musical idols for decades.

Comments welcome.

Enjoy the ride.

This is a very, very cool cover. I love Mitchell and didn’t know what to expect – in truth, my expectations were low -  but this is pretty impressive! You captured the essence of the song but everything else about it is you – and real good .  I think she would get a kick out of this. Slick guitar work and a solid rhythm track. You took a nice tune and you did a really solid cover - all your own and all good. Great going.

    Hi, Daryl,

Excellent job on this very cool cover!  The playing and vocals are outstanding, and the guitar tone is absolutely spectacular.

A million years ago, in a junior high school talent show, I remember backing up a girl on guitar while she sang "Big Yellow Taxi".

I'm on my third listen.  You definitely put your own great sounding style onto the song, and the mixing and production work sounds very modern and professional.

    Dynamite work, buddy!

Daryl, I'll listen when I get back in my time zone? :-) A couple of daze... But my next project is a cover by the Indigo girls? :-) So I'm right there with ya! :-) Music is good or bad? There are two catagories IMO? I've heard plenty of both? And I say? Why limit yourself... So I'm right there with you? I look forward to hearing it soon.

This rings a bell? It's a faint bell, but I remember the tune. I love old covers :-) Your version of this gives me a Grateful Dead vibe? Love that new guit fiddle, it's sounding awesome :-)

So glad everyone liked this tune.  Joni is one of my musical heros, this is pretty simple for her, but it's a kickin' tune.

Mark-  Yes I NEVER EVER tire of hearing that album.  The mix of tunes is just killer.

Bob - I've done Big Yellow Taxi as boogie like this as well.  That's another hot tune when played with a rock vibe.

The rhythm and lead harmony on this is with my new Fender Mexican Thinline Telecaster.  A sweet little guitar I just recently picked up.   The rest is my hollw body. Some of those Mexican Fender instruments are incredible for the price.  I bought a Mexican Fender Jazz bass today with  a small chip by the rear strap button for an amazing price.  It plays and sounds great.

    Daryl,

There are a lot of reasons to like this strong cover of a Joni song (from one of her best records). But I like the guitar work the best. Wow;  fluid, loose, and tuneful playing, with a consistently warm and bright tone.

    Enjoyed it,

Well I don't know this JM song, so I didn't know what to expect.  I must admit not my kind of music but it's well executed, it's very believable, the singing and the playing.

    Good Job

Is a Donny Osmond cover next?

OK.... I poked my ears in here for 2 reasons....

    1. One I know you to be a talented player and singer

    2.  Morbid curiosity.

I hated this tune back when it came out, and ...... yeah still do.

You did as much as anyone could do to make this into a respectable song..... nice playing and nice singing.... it sounds good too from a technical standpoint......

I'm looking forward to your next tune.

edit: sorry Daryl.... not trying to bust on you.... I just never liked Joni or anything she sang.

Thanks all.  The rhythm and the low (left channel) lead harmony is done with my new little Telecaster Thinline.

Herb -  Wow you floor me. Joni is probably one of the greatist musicians of our time.  She plays with such complexity and authority as to have toured with the Pat Metheny Group as her backup band!

In the early days she was a folk singer, and a good one.  But she had too much talent to not expand and soon was producing incredible jazz albums.  I don't think you would find a serious professional musicain anywhere (other than yourself) that would not have a ton of respect for Joni Mitchell.  And she is one of the great lyricists of all time.

You should chastise yourself severly and wander in the wilderness for 40 days and nights listening to the complete works of Joni on your mp3 player.

Seriously, I'm sorry you missed the point somewhere, I consider Joni one of America's musical treasures, and besides that..I like all her tunes.   I'm forced to forgive you though as I never liked anything by Miles Davis, and some would consider that [size=3 font="times new roman"]sacrilege.

    wow, that's funny....

Hey,  I heard her back in the days of Both sides now, Big Yellow Taxi, Help me .......and at about the same time Melanie was singing Brand new key/Roller skates songs......

In the high school lunch room, we had a juke box and those songs were in constant rotation most days. Sorry, she's just one musician that never captured my interest. At the time, my interest tended to be a bit heavier..... Zepplin, Deep Purple, The Who, Sabbath..... so JM was not on any of our play lists. Unless JM would stand for Jim Morrison.....

Truth be told..... If I was to do as you suggested, chastise myself for 40 days and nights, perhaps even flagellating myself with feathered whips, and all the while listening to Joni on my MP3 player.... not the big top 10 things from the 70's, the more creative stuff on the LP's .... perhaps, just perhaps, I would find redemption in the music she wrote & played......maybe.....

Pat Metheny was her back up band? Really? Now that's interesting....... What I could do.... and would probably enjoy this more.... is listen to the complete works of Pat Methany on MP3 for the next 40 days........ That.... I think I could do.

Herb, you obviously was listening to her old folk music at a time when your head was frimly in the rock world.  I would seriously suggest listening to some of her stuff from the time she converted to jazz.  The Court and Spark album is one of my all time favorite albums.  A lot of big name people on that album as well from Dave Crosby to Cheech and Chong.  That album was shortly before she divorced the herself from A&E label, because they wouldn't support her doing jazz.  She told them to FO and went on her own, that's when her career really took off.

I have a DVD video of one of the concerts in tour with the Pat Metheny Group as her backup band.  They were earning their money, it was not an push-over gig even for those guys.

She has sense of timeing and chord structure, second to none.  Occasionally she still does some simple tunes like this one, (you know, something I can actually play) but she is not an easy artist to copy.  Dianna Krall does a number of Joni Mitchell tunes and her album The Girl in the Other Room all sounds like a Joni Mitchell album, especially the Joni Mitchell tune "Black Crow".

To each his own, but you might give her another chance and I think that even if you don't like her style of jazz, you will have to be impressed with her talents.
