As I understand it, the portamento settings in the controller pane of the step sequencer just control the portamento time setting in your synth. So, using z3ta+ as an example, watch the global subpage in the oscillator section. and it will respond to the value you draw into the controller pane. So, to get a slide, you need to have the step sequencer on poly mode and have your step sequencer notes overlapping (you might need to merge notes to do this - ctrl and drag over the notes)
