Align a backing track to the time ruler

I am recording vocals over backing tracks purchased on itunes. It would be really handy if I new how to align the track so that it fits with the metronome or visa versa. It would make for cleaner and easier editing of comped vocals.

Can it be done? If so, how?

I believe there's a BPM Inspector within iTunes, which allows you to tap along with the track and it'll tell you the BPM, but I couldn't tell you how to find it.

    trial & error works too.

It might take a few attempts to get  it right.  But most stuff is recorded on a standard BPM (100) and not somewhere in between  (84.37 for example)

I have bpm analyzer program the dj's use. So if I know the bpm do I change it in Sonar before importing or after importing the backing track?

Its best to set the BPM on the project before you import the audio, just to prevent any glitches.
