Midi Alignment Issue in Sonar X1 Producer when copying and pasting
I am recording a midi track and decide to copy and paste part of it to a different measure. Let's say that all of the midi notes are 5 ticks late in the first section that I have recorded. When I paste this to a new measure all of the notes now align to being exactly in time. For example, in the first section I had recorded the first note position would have been 1:01:005, but in the pasted section it is now say at 12:01:000. Is there a way to paste a section of midi and have it remain in its original time positions so in the example above the first note position in the pasted section would be at 12:01:005. I would like to be able to do this and still use the "Snap to Grid section" and have it set to measure. Thanks.

There are two ways to preserve timing offset like that. When you select to copy, select in the timeline with snap enabled so you are selecting whole beats/measures. If you lasso notes, the selection will start at the start time of the first note in the selection, and you'll have the problem described because the offset is not included in the selection. Alternatively, you can drag-copy (i.e. Ctrl-drag) any selection with the Move By option enabled for Snap instead of the usual Move To (right-click the snap enable button to change the mode). This will preserve any offset in the start of the selection.

Thank you brundlefly, I appreciate your help. The second solution you mentioned worked nicely for me. (I was not sure how/where to make the changes as outlined in your first suggestion.) Cheers!

Glad you got it worked out, Eraser. In Brundle's first explanation, he was saying to use the Time Line, which is what I always do. You can set up from the actual start of any measure, to the end of another, and make that your selection. Highlight the track you want, and that precise part of the track will be selected for copying - including the silent bit before the first note of the track's first clip. RB

I will have to experiment with it a bit more and try the different methods to see which is the most efficient for me. I think there are a few ways of using the timeline: 1) Use the mouse and click and drag over the ruler/timeline to select measures; 2) Choose Edit>Select>By Time (Shift + F6). (Am I missing any ?) I guess I was selecting the section of the clip to copy directly by clicking on it with the mouse, which caused it to begin at the first midi note rather than at the beginning of the measure.

That's right, Eraser. If you haven't dragged out the first part of a clip so it actually starts at the first of a measure, then you'll be off if you directly select the clip. Dragging in the time line is easy with snap on, selecting the measures you want. RB

Hey Eraser, I have a system you might be interested in. I use a Logitech G110 computor keyboard. It is a gaming keyboard and has extra funtion keys set up as "G" keys. I have "copy" and "paste" keybinded to "G1" and "G7" respectively as they sit next to each other on the keyboard. When I need to copy and paste, I pick the track(s) that I want to copy, drag the timeline and hit "G1". Then place the now marker where i want to paste and hit "G7". Very quick operation. i do this with "snap to grid" on so things end up in the right spot. I have all the edits functions I use keybinded and labled with tape on my keyboard. It makes things go super fast.

Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V suffice for the rest of us. Nope, Ctrl-V does not suffice. It does not give you the options that "Paste Special" gives you. If you are doing a lot of editing you will want this option. Not the "Ctrl-V" paste.
