Shure ksm44 - acoustic test http://www.lightningmp3.c...e/84869-ksm44test1.mp3 i bought a ksm44 a couple of months ago, hadn't had time to really play with it yet... this is a quick demo down and dirty, (4) acoustic tracks, and then i added some vox to fill in behind the guitars. 3 separate vocal tracks, i copied all three and panned hard left/right, 4 separate acoustic tracks, threw a compressor and limiter across the mas bus, faders up some reverb and delay for ambience so, i'm thinking of running with this one.... maybe keep the 'oohs' as background harmonies ala the Eagles, and put a simple melody across the top.... floating ideas here, anybody got some?!

I'm in no position musically to offer up any ideas..............
But I did want to say the I like the all of the tracks very much tonally and the guitar sounds very nice.

For God's sake, Gonz, turn up the vocals. They are burried as all hell. Maybe the KSM44's no good? I'm "shure" the mic is fine, just the levels need to come up. Looking forward to hearing that KSM44.

no, the vox are EXACTLY where i want them to be.
they are supporting the guitars, in this mix.
the whole point was, instead of having instruments do it all, that i'd introduce the voice as a background instrument.
think of it, as if you wanted to add a synth pad, but have it very much in the background, providing nothing but harmonic structure to what's already going on.
seriously, i think one of the biggest issues with home recordists these days, is they run their vocals too DAMN HOT!!

but in this case, it's not even a song, per se, just a little instrumental piece...
if i were to superimpose a vocal across the top, maybe even then, the background vox may be just right.

Nice!! The mic sounds crystal clear. Even with the vocals tucked in the back, you can tell its grabing the details nicely.
The tune sounds very nice,some of the chord changes suggest a knod to Zepplin.

i was using my cheap mic pre as well....
as far as the arrangment, i was thinking of addding some open tuning slide guitar, in another section....
that would definitely get it into that zep style, but i'm stuck between doing some old-school blues riffs with the vocal line, or doing some nice straight pretty stuff ala CSN&Y

Could you post something with louder vox so that I can hear the mic? With the level of the vocal in this track, it's hard to distinguish from any other mic. Thanks.

it's really about the guitar capture here, not the vox.

So are you saying that you recorded the guitar with that mic? If so, it works well. My new Royer R-101 ribbon records guitar cabs beautifully...pure & natural reproduction.

now, a while back, i posted links to an album i recorded for a local band here in salt lake city, "Kettlefish" all of the vocals on that album, were captured with a Shure KSM44. in fact, that's the session that enamored me to the ksm44 to begin with. Chad, the singer, has got to have one of the loudest voices i've ever heard. it melted every other mic we tried, but the ksm44 hung right in there. here's a link, to the kettlefish stuff, any song off the "Prime" album features the KSM44 captured thru a combination of a A Designs Audio MP-1, and a MAudio Project Mix I/O http://www.kettlefish.net/media.html http://www.myspace.com/kettlefish

yes, the mic was used for the (4) guitar parts, then i added 3 vocal harmony parts, copied those and panned them opposite sides of each other, just to fill it out.

yep, something this simple, is easy to apply just about any treatment to it.
sometimes i go after a vocal tune, only to have it land as an instrumental.
i literally whipped this out in a half hour, right off the top of my head, so it DOES need some work to dial it in.
but it seems to want a story to go along with it..
