Sonar X1 and GPO 4
I am using GPO 4 with Sonar X1. When I enter notes in staff view all is well for the first few notes then the volume falls by 50% or so. There is no change in velocity and the sliders in both Garritan and Sonar do not move. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I had not on my music PC. But on my Vista machine last night I noticed that when I was previewing midi clips with Session Drummer 3, the first part of the clip was loud then it dropped in volume like your talking about. Don't know if it's related, but thought I would post and see what happens.

I inserted a CC1 message at the beggining of the track. Apparently Garritan uses this controller for volume. So far it seems to be working.

I am sorry, I can't remember exactly where in the preferences it is located but there is a toggle to enable a track to search back for any controller data before it resumes play. You can uncheck that box and it will disregard the last controller command. I had trouble with GPO4 going silent because Sonar was searching back thru the midi track resetting the volume to zero.

I think it's the "Zero controllers on playback" option, or similar, under the Project section of the Preferences dialog. It took me a while to get used to this after I started using GPO.

We've all been there! I haven't. I have GPO4 and was thinking about using it this week. I have X1E, a midi keyboard controller, and an Octa-Capture. I have never quite understood midi and have really have only worked with audio recording. It is running into things like this when I try that discourages me. Can someone perhaps give a readers digest version of what to do to record using GPO4 and make it a "for dummies" version, I mean assume I don't know anything. I got this from the "internets" but I don't know how or why I would use it: Controller events In MIDI, adjustable parameters for each of the 16 possible MIDI channels may be set with the Control Change message, which has a Control Number parameter and a Control Value parameter. GM also specifies which operations should be performed by multiple Control Numbers: [font=""]1 Modulation wheel 6 Data Entry MSB 7 Volume 10 Pan 11 Expression 38 Data Entry LSB 64 [color=#0645ad font=""]Sustain[font=""] pedal 91 Reverb level 92 Tremolo level 93 Chorus level 94 Celeste level 95 Phaser level 98 Non-registered Parameter LSB 99 Non-registered Parameter MSB 100 Registered Parameter Number LSB 101 Registered Parameter Number MSB 121 All controllers off 123 All notes off I see that CC 1 is the mod wheel and CC 11 is expression which I would need using GPO4 but I don't know how I would enable them and I wonder if CC 11 is related to aftertouch maybe?? Thanks for any help before I try it and run into a wall. Are these used to assign functions to sliders and knobs? Julien

GPO 4 is quite a deep program so to keep things simple the best advice I can offer is that when you record using a keyboard you want to move the mod wheel to ensure that you get a CC:1 lane in the P.R.V. If you draw notes in the P.R.V. then you need to create a CC:1 lane by going Edit > New value type... > Type: Control > Value: 1 and hit the OK button. If you have a CC:1 lane you can control the volume (swells etc) and it ensures that you will hear something as the most common mistake with GPO 4 is having the mod wheel (CC:1) at zero. Worry about getting some sounds going and then get into the other stuff. The manual is your friend. Grum.

Thanks grumbleweed, I don't know how to mark this post as useful but if I did I would. I will use the manual.

To recap: When you use GPO - *always* wiggle your mod wheel first. GPO uses the mod wheel for volume (instead of normal volume (cc7) - which is generated by hitting a key on your MIDI keyboard) - so if the mod wheel (which generates cc1) is "zero" you get no sound. I've had GPO for years and I still forget this sometimes ;-) If you're new to this - just wiggle the mod wheel before you record your first MIDI note (wiggle it while you're recording). Then you can read the manual to figure out how to edit and draw in your own cc1 values - or you could even record yourself moving the mod wheel - after you've got your MIDI notes. I hope this makes sense. If I'm just confusing matters - please ignore this post ;-)

A trick I've used with Garritan JABB, which uses CC1 the same way in Aria Player, is to copy MIDI velocities to a CC1 lane in the controllers pane of the PRV so each note has its initial volume set according to velocity. If you record MIDI in real-time from a keyboard and are used to controlling dynamics with velocity, this can be very helpful.

Nice one, brundlelfy... I'll have to remember that, because I do in fact try to control dynamics using velocity. It's just as ingrained thing.

copy MIDI velocities to a CC1 lane in the controllers pane of the PRV Very good idea! How do you do that though? Can you drag n drop? (how would you select the MIDI velocities?) Use the "select" filter? (to select cc7 messages the "paste" in the other lane?)

Insert a Modulation lane (if you haven't already got one), select all the notes, right-click in the header area of the Mod lane, and choose "Copy Selected Events to this Lane".
