Live from Cancun...
We're here! So far, no hurricanes, bad water or muggings. Beautiful weather, gorgeous ocean and sand and hotel pools. Food is wonderful, and since this is an all-inclusive vacation, it's all free. Not so good when I'm still trying to lose that 5 lbs. from the summer sit-down job. But it's still good. :) Saw some amazing artisans last night here at the motel...a man painting with his fingers and fingernail. After watching him paint one, I had to buy it. Would love to have bought 10 of them. And although the vacation package is so cheap it's unbelievable, all the attractions aren't. We may splurge on Xel-ha tomorrow though. But we took a morning walk on the beach this morning (didn't quite make the sunrise but I'll try again). We saw several fishermen pull in huge nets of fish, etc. But the most fun was seeing a man from the hotel dig up baby sea turtles from their holes. They do all they can to protect them here. He'll release them tonight so the birds won't get them during the day. I think most of them will hatch out this week...and to think that we just stumbled upon him digging them out. We couldn't communicate all that well, but later a young man fluent in Spanish was able to find out a few more facts for us. If you're still reading, one of the interesting things he found out was that those turtles don't actually lay their eggs right in a row in that little fenced in area. :) They lay them down on the beach, then the men dig them up and PUT them in the fenced in area, wait for 2 months, then dig them up. Anyway, it was about as fun as going the zoo. I guess in about 10 years, those (females) that live will return to lay their eggs here...huge 4'-5' long sea turtles. Anyway, rather a fun way to start the day. Now we're off to try to avoid getting sucked into buying a time share. He he...they don't know what they're up against. :) Talk to you all later!

Xel-Ha was one of the most amazing things I've done in Mexico (along with going to Chichen Itza). I hope you do it, it's well worth the extra $$$.

Thanks Matt. Since we waited so long to sign up, we decided to go to Xcaret instead. In the airport, a woman who comes here to vacation several times a year said it´s a must-see and it looks similar. I can only hope. :) Boy, this spanish computer is more fun than I´ve had in a long time too.... Thanks for the well-wishes everyone. I may write more about it cause I´ve found things quite interesting, and even though I don´t consider myself a writer and haven´t even kept a diary for a few years, I feel like writing. Not really on this computer though.... Anyway, we did get to help release those baby sea turtles tonight. That´s an interesting story and was well attended by about 30 of us that probably had never heard of releasing sea turtles before and were all of a sudden filled with passion, making sure they made it to the sea, past the grip of the big birds hovering overhead. Simple pleasures. :) Off to Isla Mujures tomorrow, compliments of the tourist industry, thanks to a zealous tour ´guide´we met in Walmart.

Very cool,Janet So many people go to Cancun just to get hammered in the resort bars. But there you are, releasing the sea turtles. Vacation, a rare opportunity, and a certain amount of very rewarding work. And you have a story to tell. Isn't the surf positively sublime?

Hi Janet, I find it ironic that I ended up with a gig on Miami Beach this week and you are in Cancun. I hope you have a great time... and it seems like you already are. The small beach town I grew up in had a turtle rescue center and I have experienced the wonderful excitement of seeing both turtles lay eggs and later the baby turtles hatching and going out to sea. It's an incredible thing to witness and I am very glad you got a chance to experience some of it. Sea turtles are one of the most mysterious creatures... they stay out at seas for years and years and yet can navigate back to the beaches that they came from when it's time to lay eggs. Wow. all the best, mike

I'd avoid the time share tour/pitch (unless it was a condition for the low cost vacation) mainly because it is a time waster. Your hour and a half to two hours would be better spent laying in a hammock with a cool beverage listening to the waves gently lapping the shore, and the sounds of the birds overhead, enjoying the breeze and the smell of the ocean...... Have fun, it sounds like life is good. Come back and write some sand & ocean inspired music. NOTE: hey, and you have internet down there too....! Yeah, life is good.... Pictures?

Bob, the surf IS sublime. I can't get enough of that aquamarine blue, and I've seen the ocean more than most Oklahomans, I imagine. :) I did get to see the sunrise the other morning. Sunrise on the Caribbean Sea...I found myself wishing I had a decent camera to capture it...AND a grand piano to play along. I have no idea why these rooms don't come with pianos... :( You know what else I'm enjoying? Just talking to people and hearing their stories. I find it fascinating to hear how and where they learned English (one guy has sold sunglasses on the beach for 15 years. He learned English quite well just by talking to tourists. His next mission is to learn how to read and write it. Poor guy!) Met a few Canadians who love their jobs and don't miss the cold. And then we met one Mexican who went to HS in Chicago, sent by the International Rotary club. Now he works for the tourist industry (like everyone else!) and tricks people into listening to time share pitches. While not quite living up to his name (Angel), it was fascinating to talk with him, even if we did get duped. lol Anyway, never enough time to ask questions and listen, IMO. You know another thing that has made this week so cool? Just last week I found the book 'Rhett Butler's People' at a garage sale. Now that's a fun read and guarantees I'm never bored! :) And then there was the finger/fingernail painter that came here with other artesans and set up shop in the hotel. He paints gorgeous ocean-scapes on tiles using only his fingers and fingernails. My main problem was deciding which one I wanted. But after watching him paint a very colorful one in about 20 minutes, I bought it. When he came back another night, I finally decided on another one and splurged on it too. I'll post of those when/if we get them home whole. I recommended he paint on wood so they're easier to transport, but he assured me it would be easy. We'll see. :) Anyway, I passed a pleasant hour or so just being mesmerized at the painting process. Mike...you're in Miami? We almost went to the Keys until I saw this ridiculously cheap package deal. Only had to waste 2 hours to hear their talk (how do you spell shpiel? lol)...the food is out of this world, the staff are incredibly friendly and the hotel is great. Except for no pianos in the room, of course. But yeah...we got to see adult sea turtles today...wow...those things are crazy big. I'd LOVE to see them lay their eggs some day. Anyway, I had read enough about the Keys before coming here that now I'd really like to see them some day. So maybe... :) I hope you're having a great time! Thanks Matt. But don't worry...sometimes I need a push. :) We made it to Xcaret today, even though it was pouring rain when we left and we had to seriously consider whether it was worth going or not. Glad we did though...the rain let up and it was a very nice day. Snorkeling was cool, as was the aquarium, the guy walking around with tame parrots he let us hold, etc., etc. Herb, yeah the first one we had to do to get this ridiculously cheap deal. The second one, well, read what I wrote to Bob. But we got a few sweet deals out of the deal. I did begin to wonder what part of no that man didn't understand. Oh well. Now we know... We did get several hours just lying on the beach too. And yeah, I had a great piece written in my head while watching the sunrise. Not sure I can get it back, but I may decorate my studio a little better to help the ol' inspiration. :) Yeah, we have internet...in the 'business center' with 3 computers, all of which have their little quirks. To get it in our room is $15 a day. I figured for 4 1/2 days we can live with the inconvenience. Pictures will be coming, but not for a few days. And they're not on the pro camera, unfortunately. Too risky to carry that thing around. Well, Ed, you'll never believe this, but I've got an improvement for the piano right before the slow part. (well, it's in my head) I'm sure you wouldn't mind changing that song just once for me, would you? :) Yeah, Jon, I'm afraid he's learned I'm not as easy to get along with as some may think. lol Well, off to Canada tomorrow. Not exactly holiday, but hopefully we'll manage a little fun.
