Ya know, I was thinking...

I got my new HOG magazine from Harley and had a thought..well more than one because
it has many great writings.
Riders write in with stories of the trip and stuff like that. There are riding tips and just a lot
of good reading for only 70 pages or so.

Anyway...I find it kind of strange that Harley-Davidson hasn't branched off into many more
ventures like bicycles, off-road bikes, etc.
Seems like a good way to employee a great many people for a long, long time....and around the world now.

So I wonder whats up with that? Seems like they would have thought of it.

Harley's long and storied history is pock marked with several attempts at either diversifying or transmogrifying their core business model. And every one has been met with near or just plain disaster.  Folks especially try to forget the AMF years.  I think they've been snakebit so many times you couldn't get ol Willy G. to do ANYTHING other than build motorcycles...er excuse me....Harleys.

My guitarist in CA (1979) had a Harley enduro. I think it was a Spanish or Italian bike rebranded.

I'm not thinking that any of those are examples of Harley setting out
to build something other than a motorcycle.

I imagine something like a line of Harley-Davidson bicycles for example....not a joint venture.

I remember the Rapido and that flop of a race bike venture....and the slab of chrome days of AMF..that was destroying the company. Sure glad Willy got the company back.

I see markets that apparently they're not interested in. Maybe I should write the editor
    of the HOG mag. :)

A Harleybicycle would probably weigh 150 pounds if they built it according to Harley phiosophy.... "if it don't work build it again twice as thick and twice as heavy".

It has worked well for them I think but I sure do wish people would leave the stock pipes on them...
