What do I know now

Minding the title of the thread, the question is, “What do I need to know?” Just because someone did not have bad experience (which is subjective), does not mean everyone should have the same opinion. It is not even interesting to note that negative experience classified as trolling. What do one need to know before upgrading? That the workflow got worse, not better. That one should forget what they used do and learn new motor skills and habits. That many useful functions were taken out. That it require 2 monitors because it is demanding on the real-estate. The soft synth windows being sucked in to main window and minimized to a point of being unreadable. That it is very uncomfortable program and makes your hand hurt due to strains of using mouse. That you need to read a manual to figure out how to copy and paste a clip. That it is not stable and freezes any time it wants. That it does not create new tracks and you have to perform 5 clicks before you can set the IOs. That step sequencer is pathetic and ridiculous. That Staff view has no note length selection option. That there is no more copy/paste or undo/redo buttons. And Cakewalk is going to continue selling you unfinished deficient product and then charge you for an upgrades. They fixed some bugs and now we have to pay again to get what was supposed to work in the first place. It has been like that for years. There same bugs in X1 I have seen in Sonar 4. And every time we forced to pay more we hoping that it will finally work, but it never will because the scam is to sell us more upgrades. So go ahead, keep buying upgrades. They have much more bugs to fix.

I have, and still on occasion use Sonar PE 8.5.3 but I've pretty much made the switch over to PT 9.
It's going to take a lot of work from the Cake bakers to get me to pay for another product that they still haven't worked out the bugs on since S6PE.
They may have fixed a few but it seems I'm watching Roland take a fine product and flush it down the toilet.

Shame too because I really did enjoy Sonar and it's work flow.
Now I'm getting more familiar with my new DAW I'm not sure I want to learn another.

What you "need to know now" is that this is the Cakewalk business plan. Always has been. They break it, so they can fix it, all the while dangling the carrot of minor tweaks that get you all excited that "finally", but, alas, No.. Then you wait, or upgrade, and wait, and try to make music, then forget that you want to make music, then forget that there were bugs, then dittle with a lick or song, then start to like making music again, then get excited about your new groove, then something breaks or crashes or doesn't work, maybe another track will fix it. no. All the while in the back of your mind wondering why does everyone that's anyone in music, use a Mac. Meanwhile, wow, there's a new update to Cakewalk. $$$. repeat.

I think Cakewalk is struggling to keep up w/ the big guys w/o necessarily having the financial means that, say, Pro Tools or Logic have.

I like to use Logic as an example since it's the one I'm familiar with. Version 9 came out in 2009. It received numerous free updates and fixes since, the latest one last month or so I think. In the same period, Sonar received 2 major paid upgrades (8.5 and X1), the usual 3 free patches and then here we go again with Expanded.

FWIW, Logic Pro and Sonar are similarly priced. And Logic includes other applications like Soundstage, Waveburner and Soundtrack Pro. Logic Express which is identical, minus a few plug-ins and those additional applications, goes for $199. So in terms of price, they're in the same league.

It almost looks as if Expanded is a patch that they couldn't justify letting go free of charge, so they threw in a few goodies (originally intended to be released as part of X2) in order to make that a paid expansion and generate income. I'm not blaming them for that - it must be a tough situation for those guys, and I do believe that they care immensely. But the reality of it as a consumer is what it is.

This might look trivial, but I was looking at screenshots of X1 last night. The numeric values at the bottom of the fader are superimposed, making them hard to read. No show stopper. But I feel this speaks volume about the need to rush things out to generate income. It's never quite ready for prime time, there's always some loose ends which you hope will be fixed in the next version... Or maybe the second next one. Or then in 3 versions.

The long standing issue with the out of tune samples in Dimension is another one. How seriously can you take a company selling an instrument that is out of tune in the first place and won't fix it after countless reports?

By comparison, a recent Mac OS patch had created an issue in Logic - the oscillators in a couple of synths were drifting out of synch. It wasn't too long before Apple issued a free patch - for an application that is 2 years old.

Now that's Apple. A huge corporation. As a user, you don't get the impression that they care. There is no such thing as these boards, where you can interact with the friendly developers. It's a rather anonymous experience. You can submit tickets, and that's as far is it goes. BUT, in terms of user experience, well, if the product works, gets fixed when it breaks, to me, it makes it a bit less relevant to know whether the coder is a cool guy or not.

It remains professional - you don't have to wonder if they're doing good business or that they're having a tough time or whatever, or to be understanding or feel like they're doing you a favor and need a tap on the back for doing their job.

I hate to sound so negative. There are many reasons to use Sonar and it is a perfectly valid choice, with a great set of tools.

It's up to anyone to decide whether they can live with the business practices. If Sonar is worth it to you, great. If not, well, history shows that that's how things work in Cakewalk-land.

All the windows are dockable to anywhere you want them to be. There are screenshots to rearrange windows on the fly,and templates galore. Soft synths can be dragged to larger windows. Any loop or midi data can be simply dragged into a track or into the matrix. The sonar I have is nothing like Sonar 4.  You can make your workflow on Sonar whatever you want it to be. Copy and paste is the same as it has been for years with improvements- Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.

Like someone else has said, I blow more money eating out than I will upgrading to the next improvement. There are a lot of pros and semi-pros who regularly use Sonar and make good music. I'm not saying Sonar X-1 is perfect but I think you are only looking at things one way. I think maybe a visit to Cake TV might help you solve a lot of your issues.

I tend to agree...what if the greedy one eyed monster had a back seat for one or two years would you see a well developed engine with exhaust ready to blow and make your journey so complete that all you do is stay on the road and never want to stop. or the little greedy monster causes you to break down every few miles in the hope of getting a new shiny bike for half the price!!

    LOL!

LOL...I was also the blow more than that eating out comment...I confess! LOL

I tell ya...I've been doing Cake since 1991 with Guitar Studio 1,2 3 then the Sonars 5,6,7,8.5 and
now the X1s'....there will always be those with no system specs looking for help and those with nothing at all
just wanting to be part of it enjoying the talk or just wanting to release or just having a no good time with
anything digital. The rest?...well they have their specs listed, they have links to material or whatever productions
and they're either trying to help others or they are producing whatever with a Cakewalk program.

The OP doesn't have a system meeting minimum requirements. That was pointed out in a different thread so now it's just the stage of being upset. I do feel sorry...kinda. Kinda because apparently this is not her/your first rodeo.

I would attempt to make helping suggestions but I know all it would do is upset you Vladasyn so I just hope you feel better after blowing off the steam and hope you acquire a system capable of satisfying your needs.
