Using pitchwheel for modulation...? And recording tempochanges?

1. Is there a simple way I can use the pitchwheel to record modulation live? I have GPO and you need a modwheel for the volume but my trusty old Roland D20, which I use for input only, doesn't have a modwheel (you have to press the pitchwheel backwards to use modulation, but it's impossible to actually control volume with that method). So I thought about using the pitchwheel for modulation (middle is 0, far right is 100). Right now I simply paint the modulaterdata into the PRV, but I am thinking about getting a better string library and that painting doesn't work very intuitive, obviously.

2. Another thing I'd like a solution for is tempo changes: right now I draw tempo changes in the tempo view window, but again this is FAR from intuitive: you just can't get any feel into the music/tempo without redrawing a LOT and auditioning everything all the time... Is there another way to actually record tempo changes...?

Sonar 8.5 PE, Edirol FA-66, Behringer C-1. All instruments in my songs are VSTi's.

Another idea: could it be possible to assign one of the sliders (or knobs: don't know what's more convenient) of a Korg nanoKONTROL2 to Modulation...? I am thinking about getting that controller and maybe it could come in handy for this too...? Wish that controller had a modwheel... ;) I also thought about getting a new MIDI-keyboard with a normal modwheel, but the ones that are within my price range do not have knobs... I could of course get a cheaper MIDI-keyboard AND this Korg nanoKONTROL2... In that case I only need a keyboard with a ptich and mod wheel and keep the Korg nanoKONTROL2 for all my buttons and sliders. (Pretty neat that you can start and stop etc. with the Korg nanoKONTROL2 too, so it seems!)

Hm, I think I will copy this post to the hardware forum...
