Transport controllers
My Tascam Fireone did not make the transition to Win 7 64-bit, so I'm looking at some basic options out there for having some assignable knobs/faders but mostly just transport/scrub options to supplement the Qwerty keyboard (to continue to control playback when my qwerty USB keyboard via KVM is pointing to another computer, for example). Some of the ones that look promising: The new Steinberg CMC-TP - nice small footprint but unknown Sonar/Mackie HUI compatibility $150 Presonus Faderport $125 - Behringer BCR2000 or BCF2000. $150 well-regarded, but bigger and maybe overkill. Anyone have any praises / horror stories about these or have any other suggestions in the sub-$250 range? Thanks.

if you don't need JOG, but you want to have similar features as in Mackie controller, then I suggest you to buy Behringer BCF2000. Running in "mackie mode Sonar" you will have transport, rec-mute-solo buttons, moreover control over Vol, Pan, sends, etc. What's more using BCR as a control surface with AJ's script you can also control EQ on ProChannels, but switching between tracks isn't automatic (if you use two Behringers at once).

Well if you have an iPad or iPad 2 you can get yourself a copy of AC-7 and use that with Sonar. I do this to remotely control it if I am recording my piano for example. Very cool program. There was a lengthy forum thread on this a couple of months ago I believe. If that is not an option and you are looking pretty much for basic transport controls and some sliders and knobs but nothing fancy you can try a Korg nanoKontrol. It worked fine for me once I followed the forum topics I found on how to get things to be assigned properly. I will add a caveat that I used it in Sonar 8.5.3 but have not tried it out on X1c.

Thanks for the input. I'm a little leery of a sight-based controller a la iPad, because it requires you to look at the touchscreen as opposed to simply feeling the knobs while keeping your eyes on the Monitor or Keyboard. The BCR / BCF seems to be Behringer's "Home Run" product line - Affordable AND extremely well-regarded, while many of their other products aren't known for being particularly well-made, just dirt cheap.

Yes fair enough about the feel of a real knob/slider. My use of the iPad really came about mostly because it allows for wireless remote control and in my situation that was necessary. Good luck in your search.

Check out the BCF videos on my site (specifically the second one) to get an overview of some of the things you can do. This was done with Sonar 8.x, but a lot of it is still relavent. www.blades85.com
