I don't have anything to compare it to, not upgrading, but first time user. I'll give you my impressions later, but I think the difference from 7 is the pianos, the Hammond B3 and C3 stuff, and I think Kontakt 5 was upgraded for 64 bit?

No, but please tell me if it is worth it to upgrade from K7 Komplete 8 is a pretty lean upgrade from version 7. The "substantial" updates are Kontakt 5 and Guitar Rig 5. These two updates are far more evolutionary than revolutionary. I updated to have the latest version of Kontakt (output routing, new filter types, and additional scripting capabilities). If I wasn't concerned about having the latest version of Kontakt, I would not have spent the money to upgrade. If you don't have Komplete... and especially if you don't have any virtual instruments or amp-sim plugins, Komplete 8 is a great deal (lots of useful content).

My First impression: give yourself plenty of time to load everything, took 5 hours and I was swapping out discs as fast as they got loaded...damn, gotta be up in 3 1/2 hours to watch Manchester United.....

I got Komplete 8 as a new user so I can't comment on whether upgrading would be worth it. It certainly was a great value. As you have already found, the installation takes forever because there are 12 DVDs of software and content. My big thing was to be sure to customize the installation to put the libraries on my sample drive. The program is a great value. The organ library is pretty decent. I actually thought the New York Philharmonic piano was ok if you played with the settings a bit (it defaults to a cathedral space for the performance which is absurd.) I have Ivory II so it is definitely NOT as good as that. I have had a lot of fun playing with the strings library. I am sure it is not the calibre of Hollywood strings but it is very serviceable to me. The amount of content makes it daunting to go through everything.

Just out of interest (my copy of Komplete 8 should arrive the coming week): can you choose which parts you want to install? I don't care for everything that's in Komplete 8 and I don't want to spend hours and hours installing stuff. I'd like to install Kontakt 5 first and over time I'd like to add stuff that I'd like to use. I suppose that's possible...? (I bought the crossgrade btw so most of it will be new to me too!).
Sonar 8.5 PE, Edirol FA-66, Behringer C-1. All instruments in my songs are VSTi's. Check out Soundclick

I think I wasted 5 hours of my life...

I think I made a 5 hour goof last night. 2 days of lack of sleep from fighting landlord in court probably not best mental state to have done the installation. Everything installed perfectly ON MY DESKTOP...but not to X1. I think there must have been an installation path prompt that i did not do correctly. Does anyone who has done a full install of new komplete know if that's what happened? And if so, can you give me some advice as to how to proceed? I don't know if there is a way to route the files from where they are on my hard drive to get them into X1? Or do i need to delete all the Komplete files, then do the whole installation again, with a different path selected? Any help greatly appreciated, I'm a not too tech-y singer, I've used X1 successfully many times already importing tracks, doing vocals, and sending them back out, this is the first time i am trying to add some new stuff, for my own songwriting and recording. Jim Roseberry Komplete 8 is a pretty lean upgrade from version 7. lean ? hehe .. it's on a low fat diet if you have a few kore packs already.. either that or buy ultimate.. so my money goes elsewhere.. with that and the rug being pulled from kore 2 users. I bet their balance sheet's this year are altered due to a few fair "miffed" users with their latest offering.. either buy the low end or high end bundle I used to have more time for NI , but money is only so finite. This years "upgrade" they get nothing. I bought IK's black / white amps instead of theirs for starters

Michael Lee Smith I don't own X1, only 8.5, but in case it works the same: did you rescan the VST-folder? In 8.5 you can choose to rescan that folder everytime you start Sonar, but that can become annoying so maybe you turned off that option. If so, manually rescan the folder. You can find the option for that somewhere in er... the option screens (again, I don't own X1). If you did rescan the folder, maybe you installed the new instruments in another folder: try to find out where the new VST's are and add that folder to the folders to be scanned by X1.
