Best ADL Method

What's the best way to do Automatic Double Tracking (ADL) on vocals in X1? Thanks.

You mean create something that sounds like a doubled vocal part from a single vocal track?

Well, I don't know of a convincing way to do it automatically.  I'd make a copy of it on another track and use v-vocal to add small tuning and timing differences to the copied track.  Just a few cents and milliseconds difference will thicken up the original nicely and won't sound like you tried using a chorus or delay.

You'll need to do this to every note though.  Any notes you miss will be in perfect unison with the original and will sound like a single voice.

I use Melodyne to do this and it works well.  I'm sure the basic technique is the same in v-vocal.  You can try some shortcuts like highlight every few notes and move them all by the same pitch & time and then highlight another few notes and move them all by a different pitch & time.  Sometimes this works, other times you just have to go note by note.

Delay and Flange the doubled track a bit.

Use a send to a bus.

Or use an insert and mix the effect in using the mix control on the efx.

    best regards,

Thanks, guys. I realize my original question was not well-explained. I say ADL because sometimes people use that term as a short-hand for vocal doubling. For me, the process does not have to be automatic and it is OK if the processing is off-line. I am looking for a way to create good vocal doubling without singing the part twice or three times. Some singers are better than others at doubling, but, even with the best singers, it is sometimes a pain as they have to get all their cut-offs right, phrasing consistent, etc. My out-board TC Helicon VoiceWorks Plus works fine for this, but I thought there might be a simple way to do it in the box. Chorus is a little more subtle than what I am looking for and, to my ears, has a bit different sound. I often use original voice center and two different, doubled parts panned. Thanks again.

    There's several methods I use.....

I think an actual sung double is very hard to beat but that can be time consuming not only having to re-record but having to use V-Vocal to get the phrasing timing just right especially the t's and esses at the end of lines.

Next best down from that is using the takes I have got I'll quite often comp them into two decent takes and then go through the timing process. Again a little time consuming though.

The quick and dirty method I use is to duplicate a vocal track, then I'll nudge the duplicate back in time a little, put a pitch corrector on it and drop it a few cents to taste, then EQ them differently with slightly different effects. You can hear that method on the backing vocals in the song I've just posted in the song forum here.

I find it works quite well for a fast easy method.

After cloning your track, you can nudge it a few clicks to prevent it from sounding like it's in unison and process the clone differently. The absolute best way to do it is to resing the part like John Lennon was known for doing. Learn the phrasing real well, and don't monitor the previous track when recording the second track. You'll be surprised at how close they can sound, and you'll feel better for doing it that way.

    All the best,

you can also use Antares AVOX plugin pack - one called Choir and second - Duo.

I've just found that Harmony Engine is much worse in use thn hardware TC processors (even cheapest one Harmony G XT or Harmony M), but in other side - it gives much more control (not in Sonar's MIDI mapping un-capabilities).
