Trouble installing MOTU Electric Keys

I've installed MOTU Electric Keys and went through the instructions of where to install it:
Program files > MOTU > Electric Keys > plug-in > sounds> (paste in here).

I also installed EZDrummer and Garritan JABB3, and they're in the Program Files and in Vstplugins.    But MOTU, although in Program files, is not in Vstplugins.   When I'm in Sonar and go to Insert > Vstplugins, MOTU isn't there.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Greg

I don't have MOTU electric keys, but you have to be observant on any VST as to where the install program puts the dll for the VST.  since you say it was installed in PROGRAM FILES>MOTU>ELECTRIC KEYS>PLUGIN  then make sure you add that path to your scan list in sonar.  for X1, press "P" on your keyboard and then go to VST SETTINGS and add that path to the scan list, then rescan.

As Beagle stated, you have to watch where you  install  your vst's...

Not sure how far along you are with your system and how many vst's you have installed, but I would suggest two things:

    1) install your vsts in only 1 of 2 folders: a 32-bit vst folder or a 64-bit vst folder - this makes it very easy to manage your vsts as your collection grows...and only 2 paths are ever needed for the vst scan.

    2) don't store your sample files for these vsts on your system drive - it will eventually make imaging of your system drive horrendous.

I'm new at this, so I'm not quite sure what you mean.   I think I really messed up.  My system is 64-bit, and I installed it in my x86 folder.   Then I was told that was not correct.   Someone here at home (who supposedly knows computers) said to try installing it in the other Program Files, which I did.   They told me to create a path for it, which I did.   I went to VST Plugins and added the path, then scanned it, but it didn't do anything.   I still can't find it.  I would like to uninstall it and start all over again, but it's not allowing me to uninstall it, saying that the path is not found.

what matters where you install it is whether or not the PROGRAM is 32bit or 64bit.  did you install the 64bit version of MOTU's electric keys or the 64bit?

at this point, since you can't uninstall it, I think your friend may have gotten your system screwed up so that MOTU's uninstall program can't work.  it may require getting help from MOTU or their forums to get it uninstalled correctly, which may require registry editing at this point.

before you do that, you could try installing again.  but this time install it in the proper place.  if you're installing a 32bit program then install it in the Program Files (x86) folder, if it's a 64bit program, install it in the Program Files folder.

I do not advocate installing in cakewalk's VST directory - just install it in the default location then ADD that folder to sonar's scan list.

My advise to you, as I presume you are in this for the long haul, is to get your system back to square one first.

    - If you only have a few vsts (and Sonar) installed, I would consider un-installing them.  (Revo Uninstaller - free version is good for this).

    - Then clean up what is left using CC Cleaner (free) and then do a defrag of your system drive.

    - If you only have one drive, partition it to hold any samples for the vsts you install.  (If you have more than one drive, put these samples on the non-system drive)

You have to be careful with your installs to ensure that the "Program" parts of the install hit the system drive, the vst dll's hit the proper vst folders (32-bit/64-bit) and any samples for these vsts hit the 2nd partition (or other drive)

Planning your overall layout is very important before you proceed.  As you said you have someone in your house familiar with computers, you should have  them involved in this (as well as your installs).  And once you get up and running, be sure to image your system drive and backup your other partitions drive regularly.

Although this will take several hours to complete, you will be much farther ahead, in the long run, then trying to rework a mis-mash system.

    Good luck.
