External Insert Behaviour in X1

I am using Allen & Heath R16, and I have worked out a way to utilize a channel on the mixer in such a way that I can have the track as an OUtboard EQ, but still send it to a bus.

Okay real world example, I have my kick track external insent plugin going out to channel 1 on the R16, this means any EQ setting will be applied to the kick, I then have the Kick tracks output in Sonar set to the drum bus, and the drum bus outputs to Tracks 7/8 as a stereo, ON the R16 i have the kick track disabled to the L/R Master. Ie you can only hear the kick via tracks 7/8 , THis effectively means that Channel 1 on the desk is acting as an external EQ on Kick trac, but I can compress the kick and the drum bus independantly.

HOwever the problem is that i am using Channel 1 of the A&H for external insert SOnar locks up channel 2 as the external insert locks the track to stereo. When I insert it into a mono track it turns the track stereo, which is naff in itself, but it also means that in the scenario of the mix routing I am trying whe i want to use 3 tracks on teh A&H luike outboard EQ I am actually losing 6 tracks. This is not on as I need them for other instruments.

So has the external insert always forced to stereo, is this something that crept in in version 8.3.1 what is going on and how do I sort it, because its really getting on my nerves. Its critical to how I want to work going forward so does this work better differently in SOnar x1?As this may force me to upgrade, but I don't really want to if its not going to fix the issue.

I'm not entirely sure I'm following you exactly but if I'm getting what you are trying to do you don't need to use the external insert at all.

You can send the kick out to Channel 1 on the R16 use the EQ and return it to the same track in Sonar. DO this by selecting the R16 Channel1/2 left as the track input and output. Just make sure that on the ZED you have the Digi Send - Post EQ and Digi Return - Pre Insert buttons down. Make sure that the Sonar track input monitoring isn't on or you'll end up with a feedback loop.

You can even re-record that back onto the same track where it will create a new layer. I frequently use that. You can also put a compressor or outboard effects on the ZED insert and utilize that as well.

The ZED-R16 is one fantastic piece of kit isn't it? I'm currently sweet talking the wife with the ulterior motive of eventually getting the GR-24 with motorised faders - ok - I'm dreaming but one day.................

Looking over some earlier threads, this seems to be an issue that has come and gone for different users in different versions. But I have 8.3.1, 8.5.3 and X1e all on this machine, and they all exhibit the same problem:

I can choose a mono output, and have verified that the External Insert is only sending on that channel, but the other side of the stereo output pair is not available in the dropdown for for use by another External Insert or as the output for a track.

Since I'm seeing it in all versions, it could be an interface driver problem. I don't recall if I ever tried mono Inserts before. I do most of my work with stereo synth tracks, using stereo Inserts.

No this is not what i want to do. It was my next thought, the problem here is that i want to have my Kick EQ'd by Channel 1 on the A&H, and then I want to be able to send that resultant EQ'd Kick out to the Drum Bus When I mix I tend to throw a Gate, Compressor and EQ on my Kick, and then I send it to a drum bus which will then have a further Stereo Compressor and EQ on it to gel everythign together. YOur method would mean that the Kick would have its own channel and none of it would get sent to the drum bus. I could use a send from the kick channel in sonar, but that is pre the external insert so would send the un EQ'd signal to the drum bus. Basically i am trying to re-create what is currently possible in sonar when using a VST, Ie I vould have a chain of VST's on the kick channel Gate, COmp and EQ, and then send this channel to the drum bus, all i am trying to do is replace the EQ in that chain with a External Hardware EQ that resides on the A&H. I should mention that subsequent to running into a brick wall on this, I exported the project to OMF Opened it in Protools and have achieved this using the insert on the kick tack and by setting up a Aux INput and using that as the drum bus. So it is possible using the A&H, and the issue must be in SOnar. I just wandered if this issue occurs in SOnar X1, I only bought protools for compatability reasons and to be competitive, but if this is not resolved its the first reason i have come accross to do more projects in PT. Oh that and the fact that i was able to creat a mono bus and sum by top and bottom snares to it and then send the summmed output to the drum bus. Ie a 2 level hierachy of bus'ing not possible in SOnar. SOrry, i am not trying to stir anything up, I am a huge fan of SOnar and have even been accused of being a fanboy on here, just to give background.

Hi Brundlefly, it does seem to be a bug in the behaviour, personally i think its becuase the External insert behaves like a stereo plug it appears in the track as one, has the two little lines underneath and forces the track into stereo. Its certainly not with the A&H as I also tried it just now using my MOTU 828 and same problem, so its not interface specific, the linking factor is SOnar sadly. Perhaps they could have two external inserts, one mono and one stereo like on the liquid mix, have 2 seperate dll files and you choose between mono and stereo in the drop down menu. G

OK bear with me, I think I'm getting it, I assumed the drum buss was on a send. What about using an extra track within Sonar then?

Track 1 output to channel 1 on R16, digi return pre-insert, dig send post EQ. Sonar Track 2 input from R16 Channel 1/ Left and the output to drum buss.

    Wouldn't that do it?

The Mars bar goes to FastBiker Boy, thats a great idea, I had not thought of that, and it would probably solve the issue, I will try it and let you guys know, i have had to turn everything off to spend 'quality time' ONe thought, would there be any issue with delay compensation doing it that way, because external insert is supposed to compensate, would sonar work it out?

Yeah after I'd posted I thought the only issue might be latency 'cos you'll need to input monitor on the second track. That depends on how low you can go I guess.

Thinking aloud here, never tried this........... but how about outputting your drum buss to a channel on the ZED? You could still monitor it by sending it to the ZEDs LR Buss and then at mix down just change the drum buss out to you master buss. Would that work to help with latency?

Sonar treats I/O as stereo pairs. So if you use Output 1 Output 2 gets taken as well.
I've been wanting a mono external insert for some time now.

I am already sending the drum bus to a pair of channels on the R16, the idea was to use Channel 1 as an hardware EQ. Signal flow ideal Kick track in sonar External insert out to channel 1 of R16, channel 1 is set to not send to LR so this channel is silent as per the master coming from the R16, Kick returns into Channel one and is then sent to a BUS in sonar, this stereo bus is then routed out to Channels 7 and 8 respectively who are then routed to the LR This mimics the way i would bus drums in Sonar, just replacing SOnars master bus with the R16 LR its nice as well becuase I can send all effects to the Sonar Master bus, and use the DIgital master to LR and that essentially gives me another bus on the desk albiet a digital one :) Shame taht sonar deals with external inserts only in stereo pairs.
