Faders & ms
In Sonar 8.5 for track faders...if I have an eq and a compressor in the fx bin for that track does that track's fader control the volume before passing through the eq/ comp or after? and... How many milliseconds in 1 second? I'm guessing 1000 thanks ps...lots of tumbling tumbling tumbleweeds around these parts these days haha

1) it depends on whether you have the POST or PRE FADER button on or not. 2) yes, 1000 milliseconds in 1 second.

Oh I thought post and pre only related to signals sent to a bus...not to plugs in the fx bin of that track

so sorry! I WAS thinking of SENDS, not FX Bin. the FX Bin is PRE FADER. for post fader you'd need to set up sends.

Thanks Beagle...er pre fader huh...so naturally adjusting the fader with comp/ eq already in the fx bin and set up would alter the way the comp and to a lesser extent, the eq, are working?

The Gain Knob control the volume going into the "Tracks" FX bin. The pre and post button is for the bus, not the track FX bin. The Track fader is after the tracks FX bin. The Gain Knob is before the tracks FX bin Cj

No, exactly the opposite, the bin comes before (pre) the volume fader so the volume just turns up and down your compressed and eq'd signal. If you were to adjust the gain control (which, in turn is before the bin) then you would be altering the signal to (and therefore the sound of) any dynamics processing (comps, gates etc) downstream of it.
I'm not sure that straight digital eq sounds much different depending on its input level (obviously if it's a 'character' eq it might but that's the character bit rather than the eq bit).

What is the difference between the volume fader and the gain control? The volume fader is the thing you slide up and down on the track...where is the gain control?

In the Track View, the Gain and Volume are both controlled by faders; Gain is input level, and volume is output level. Be aware that gain only affects the input level of recorded audio and soft synths, not live input from your interface. In the Track Inspector and Console views, Gain is a knob at the top of the strip.

Here's the Track View: Where is the Gain fader? Where is the Volume Fader? Did you say there was a fader for both 'Volume' and 'Gain'? I've circled a 'volume' 'slider' and a 'Trim' 'slider' Here's the Console View: Where is the Gain knob at the top of the strip? I've circled a fader. Can you point out what I should be looking at? thanks

Sorry.. I keep forgetting when I'm posting in the "Old SONAR" forum. Gain was called "Trim" in earlier versions, and it's not labeled in the track view like it is in X1 now. It's the one to the right of Pan in your screenshot. And the one Above them is output Volume. You should get Tool Tips that pop up when you hover over them, telling you what they are. In the Console view screenshot, it's the histogram-style slider at the top of the strip labeled "Trim".

Ok...so the 'trim' adjustment is what you call 'gain'...and that is used to adjust the volume level of the track AFTER the signal has passed through whatever effects are in the fx bin?

No, Gain/Trim controls the level of the input to the track; it's before everything. Volume controls the output level. It's after everything.

Ok...so in the Console view it is the up and down sliding fader that controls the volume after everything? And in the Track view it is the slider I have circled in red in my image above?

I had forgotten about the Trim/Gain. thanks CJ and brundlefly. but I wanted to re-emphasize what brundlefly said here for anyone reading it. it's PRE-FX bin, but it does NOT affect the incoming signal. only the hardware interface can do that.

Right...all I want to know I think is what fader controls pure volume AFTER the fx bin...is it as I said in post #14
