Mixing from Frozen Tracks!

Hi,

Can anyone give me reasons why not mix using tracks that have been frozen and where effets bin has bee bi-passed. The effects are still available and usable against the audio file that the freeze created. Therefore I think I'm still getting the benefits of a regular track bounce without having to separate the audio file from the folder.

Any one not in agreement with this?

Thank you for your help.

I'm sure someone can give his/her reason not to do it - but the proof is in the pudding.  If you get satisfactory results mixing this way then there is nothing wrong with it!

That's a reasonable answer, much appreciated. I am getting good results with it but I wasn't sure if I was missing the bigger picture. i.e. missing functionality, or quality etc....

Thank you again for your rapid response.

It's my understanding that when you freeze a track, any active fx's in the bin become part of the freeze, hence the default "bypass bin" to avoid having the same fx applied twice to the frozen track. Do I need to review my understanding of this freeze feature?

Alegria, you can bipass the fx bin when doing a freeze by going into the freeze options and deselecting the "Track Fx" option. This way the synth is frozen and you can then apply any affect that you want.

FWIW I generally freeze all synths when I'm reasonably sure I'm done editing, recording, etc - and going into "mix mode".   I also have my freeze options set NOT to freeze the FX - as those tend to need more tweaking during the mix phase anyway.

Freezing the synths - aside from freeing up CPU cycles and memory - also insures that the project will playback even if the synths no longer exist (for whatever reason) and the project is more transportable (assuming the FX are available on other systems, but even if not - the wavs will be fine).

So that's what works best for me, generally.

By necessity and before my new build, I had to constantly freeze my tracks to give me that much more system resources to work with. And that also included fx's that were already settled for that track so to speak. I would then bypass the bin for any additional processing when need be (not involving existing fx's). I agree with your assessment now that I realize I din't properly read your original post.

For example if you are using ezdrummer or superior you have your track template already setup and name with kick snare etc. One you freeze each drum part goes to the proper track if configured correctly. You then by pass bin and you save yourself loads of problems setting up the same track again. Once setup correctly its a very quick method of working
