    Yes. with mixed results.
Usually. there is a better option in place already.
Once, I quit a plumbing job after the owner of the company refused to match a standing offer. Another company in the same area had seen my work, and offered a substantial increase, because they were in dire need of some competent plumbers.
I received a rather scathing phone call from the owner of the company I had quit.
Twenty minutes later, I received a phone call from his second in command, congratulating me on the move.
    That felt pretty good.
Another time, I quit a job with nothing waiting, and it took about a month to land something. It worked out, but was somewhat trying in the meantime.
The economy was much stronger at that time.
I have had to draw unemployment twice, when companies I was working for folded. That was an extremely dehumanizing experience.
While working for somebody else can be frustrating, working for yourself has its own headaches.
I've seen whats involved, and frankly, I am willing to make the tradeoff.
I am currently a cable tech, and while it can be immensely frustrating, it is also very rewarding work. I stumbled into this after moving to Texas a little over two years ago.
I am not getting rich, but the job holds a lot of personal satisfaction.
I slog through mud, climb poles, crawl through 140 degree attics, and have a positive impact on people's lives on a daily basis. I like what I do. That's the key.
Quitting a job you hate is fine, but hopefully you have something better lined up.
In any case, best of luck to you. Keep it shiny side up.

I have. Worked at a hospital for 12 years. While it wasn't that bad it was very boring. Worked nights in parts of the building where no one else was so I was usually all alone. There were a few other guys that I would hang out with on breaks and at some point in the night would goof off with. We caused all sorts of trouble but never really got in trouble for it. Oh the stories I could tell.

Anyways, just before I quit I was supposed to go to a training seminar which always made me mad when they had these things because they always planned them for the middle of the day when I was supposed to be sleeping. Since I knew I was going to be quiting but had not yet given my notice I just skipped it. Well my boss caught me one morning to tell me that he had reschedualed the training and tried to remind me about how important it was (which it wasn't, just the same stuff that I heard every year for 12 years). I looked right at him and said "I don't think that is going to happen." He was dumbfounded! "What do you mean?" he said. I said "Well I am out of here in two weeks." It took him a couple of moments to realize what I was saying. Finally he said "OH! I see." It felt great to quit.

I guess it is impowering to think that you no longer need to stay with a particular job and especially when you are really ready for a change. I went from a grunt job to a salaried position where I work the hours I want, sleep at night and make twice as much money as before. Even when things get tough at this job I don't ever regret leaving the hospital even tough it really wasn't all that bad. Good Luck!

yeah it requires some guts and self confidence especially in US where without steady income it is hard and can be even scary unless you're rich. If somebody has mortgage and family to take care of then good luck...
Anyway it's great to be free and not dependent on the employment. Working 9-5 what with commute gives you often 10 hours a day is such a waste of life....

Re:did you ever quit your job? October 19, 11 2:37 AM (permalink)
Did, just a few months ago. Boss wouldn't allow me to take my remote position on the road, my fiancée had signed for 2 years of touring.

I fought a nasty fight w/ them because nothing in my contract prevented me from actually doing so as long as I complied to certain rules. One of the main reasons I had taken that job was that I knew we were likely to go on tour. I debunked every supposedly legal argument they used and worked on my case 12 hours a day on top of my regular job for a couple of weeks but eventually had to quit as they were stalling and we had to leave. I guess they saw it as an opportunity to make a cut.

So I did quit against my will but focusing on the positive side. I'm with the woman I love more than anything in this world, working with and for her, traveling and doing what I've always wanted to do: music. This is an opportunity to get out of the loop I was stuck in, working office jobs. And when we settle down after that tour, if the music/studio thing doesn't work out, or if we don't start our own business, I can always get back to office jobs.

Bob, with your height, you're halfway up them poles already...

Totally agree what you said. I look after houses & gardens often for people that are unable to do it themselves. Nothing better than leaving a place looking better than when you arrived, and a happy customer.

Downside: I'll never retire on the money it makes.

I've never quit, but oh boy have I not wanted to to do it many, many, many times!
The math is just cruel: I make my bread in fur business, grading skins, teaching breeding stock grading etc., and there is absolutely no use for my skills in any other company in the country.
And if there was, it would be the same job I want to get rid of.

Not having any university degree or such, quitting this job would simply mean going to packing screws in a hardware store for 1/3 of the salary or something similar.

I've quit a few, got fired from more, and always seem to come out on top.

The last time I was fired, it was from a pretty cushy job.... good pay, good benefits, room above me to climb the ladder...... I was supervising 45 people and basically didn't have to touch a thing if I didn't want to.

They... the people above me, didn't think I liked my job so I was fired after one year in that position.  I decided then and there, after talking with my wife, that I would start a business so no one could ever fire me again and cut my income to zero. My wife  was the one encouraging me to start a business. I turned down 2 job offers to start the business. I guess she knew me better than I knew myself. It wasn't easy going the first year or two but things got better. Now I actually enjoy what I'm doing since I am in a position to pick and choose the jobs I actually want to take....and I turn down quite a bit of work if I don't like the job, or the person offering it.

I am the kind of person who can not suffer a fool, and it seemed that the majority of my bosses all seemed to fit into that category very nicely.  Idiots!

I'm 20 years into my own business now.... business has been good, I'm comfortable but not rich by any means.

Quitting or getting fired can be the best thing for you. It was for me.

Since leaving school (with no degree) I've had 9 jobs.

I was made redundant from 1, sacked/laid off from 3, left voluntarily from 4 and I'm still in 1.

If I'd stayed with the first one I left from, I'd be in hog heaven by now, so that was a mistake. (But this in turn actually opened other doors which would otherwise have remained closed)

Strangely, all the ones I was sacked/laid off from have led to an increase in salary/benefits form the next employer.

But if I could leave here tomorrow, you wouldn't see me for dust. I detest it.

I've only done it once.  It was under very bad circumstances, and felt FANTASTIC.  It also helped that I knew that a week later I'd be on my way to New York to make a record...

I'd love to do it again, but this time I'm waiting until I have another job lined up.

More than once. Sometimes it's the only way out of a bad situation. It's a sad commentary on the state of labor and industry when you can't afford to leave a job because there isn't another to go to. We are slaves to the paycheck.

When it was my doing, with the exception of this one time (I was 28), leaving voluntarily was always for a perceived better position.

I have been let go three times in my life. The latest was somewhat expected; just a few months sooner than I expected. I know something good is just around the corner but I'm keeping my eyes open all the same.

I've quit most of my jobs. I never really had a job more than a year. Now I work from project to project either here or there so it feels like I'm quiting my jo or get fired all the time.

    It ain't bad...

Quiting or loosing my job always felt like a world of opportunities opened up. Until I got a new job and everything was boring again...

I've left employment in various ways.  Sometimes, the decision was not mine.  I've had employers give me the "You'll never work in this town again!" speech while others have begged me not to leave.

Many of us struggle to identify ourselves by who we are rather than what we do.  To my chagrin, I find that I derive a non-trivial amount of my self-esteem and identity from my job.  Losing the job (voluntarily or otherwise) impacts my perception of myself.  I'm not as "grown up" in this area as I'd like to think I am.

Also, my family has grown accustomed to living indoors and I hate to disappoint them too badly.

The first time was a toss-up between quitting and getting fired. I got tickets to see one of the first The Wall concerts in LA. Told the boss I needed 2 days off to travel to the show. He said no, I went anyways. I was young enough where it didn't really make a difference one way or the other.

The last time was in 2003. I was working for one of the Big 3 automakers in middle management. Lots of extended travel, good benefits and decent income. Hated the job, as it basically required me to blow into town, observe a dealerships staff from top to bottom and clean house as I saw fit. Then re-staff the place and move on. On a weekend home, I won a large online poker tournament, and the next day I quit to turn pro and never looked back. I've since started 2 small businesses that require very little of my day, and I still play cards frequently, but no longer online. The wife was extremely supportive of my decision and we haven't regretted the move for a second.

I work at least 60 a week so you don't have to........

thank you man! maybe some day we switch when I retire
