Weird behavior?

I drop an effect (melodyne) in the track... no audio goes thru this effect... Try another one, drop a compressor, no audio goes thru either... Open a new audio track, drag al the wave files from the old track to the new track, drop the same effects, now it works... What's wrong??? Also, why has the gain no effect on the volume??? It's the first time I can't raise volume with the gain fader... I feel like a total newbie

Sounds like you inadvertently bypassed the whole FX bin. The "FX" label in the bin goes dim when you do this. Check the context menu for the bypass toggle. I'm not sure what the keyboard shortcut is.

Gain affects only the input level from recorded audio and soft synths. It does not affect live audio coming from your interface. Could that explain it?

Not at all...  The fx bin was not bypassed, as for the gain, I opened the project in 8.5 and the gain was working, BUT this morning, I got a BSOD...  I think it's related.  Got to find what the problem is with my computer.

Please state if you are using 64 bit Sonar or 32 bit. Also please state the full version in the signature (i.e. X1C?).
    Thanks.

Sonar X1C 32 bits. It appears that it was my Firewire 800 PCIe card that was causing the trouble. using the onboard FW400 port instead, and tonight, no weird behavior, everything seems fine...
