My Physical Therapist
You never know when inspiration will strike, and sometimes it's from places you wouldn't expect. For example: last July I pinched a couple of nerves in my back that left me hobbling, and my arms went numb from the shoulders to the fingertips. One morning while my very cute, very young therapist was contorting my neck into unlikely positions, I mused aloud: "I'll bet in the history of rock and roll, no one has ever written a song about a physical therapist." The closest I could think of was B B King's Beautician Blues, and a few tunes about waitresses. Now, a subject of that nature might better be left to one of our great composers, say, Bapu or Larry and James, but I decided to give it a whirl anyway just for a lark. Stephanie thought it was pretty funny, after her initial comment: You wrote a song about another woman? I do it all one this one, including my very first arrangement for brass, using the PRV. I'm a rank novice with the softsynths, but I think it turned out pretty well. Here's the link: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11147574 I hope y'all like it, let me know what you think. Mark

For some reason the text editor won't let me do paragraph breaks and such. My high school English teachers would mark me down for that.

Phat hook! I'd love to hear this with more instrumentation, get that snare back a bit out of the way and get all that brass and guitar up! Also, the compressor on the vox is getting a bit clicky on a few transients. Maybe try a couple of compressors doing less, rather than just one to do the whole job? Child

I can't comment on the mix (laptop speakers). "my very cute, very young therapist was contorting my neck into unlikely positions" Sounds like she would cause me to be more tense than relaxed? :-) Lower Maureen, lower, lower, RIGHT THERE! My chiropractor and I spend time every week, so I can empathize... When your spine is outaline, it ain't so sublime. I enjoyed it, what did Maureen think?

Hey, Mark, How are you doing? Hope she has your back straightened out! Very cool and fun song with clever lyrics as always, strong vocals, and a nice bluesy vibe. I particularly like the surf rock guitar solo. Great stuff, Mark, have a good one, buddy! Bob

This chorus is quality and has real potential in my opinion, made me laugh. The mix needs a little bit of work, snare seems a little forward, most of the instrumentation needs to come forward a little, cos those backing guitar licks are cool. Cian

:) This is cool. What does Maureen think? Funny where inspiration comes from, huh? :) Vocals somehow seem too close or something...not sure how to describe it. But good job, cool tune and great lyrics. Glad Stephanie was cool with it too. :)

child, after hearing it on a few different systems, I agree about the instruments coming forward a bit. The sibilants in the lead vocal are a problem. I tried EQing them out, but could only do so much. And I'm recording in a far from ideal environment (the guest bedroom). I do what I can. Thanks for listening. Band - the subject does open itself to licentious interpretation, but I resisted my baser instincts. And in my two experiences in therapy, both times I came out in worse shape than I entered. Glad you liked it....the song, not the therapy. And I haven't heard back from Mari yet to know how she liked it. Bob, thanks for checking in. I thought the guitar solo was a bit self indulgent, but, hey.....that's what I do.glad you liked it. Cian, yeah the mix needs a few tweaks, and then I'm done with it. But I'm glad someone likes the rhythm guitars, I think they're pretty good too. Janet, I agree about the vocals, and like you I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe I need a new mic. And a new sound-treated room. Steph doesn't mind picking on me a little, but she's not serious. and she's entitled. Glad you liked it, young lady, and I like your new avatar too. Thanks for the feedback, people.

Huh. Again, the text editor removes my paragraph breaks. I don't get it, but I'll never pass class this way.

For those who enquired: young Mari dropped me an email to say she loves the song, to the extend that she posted a link on her Facebook page for her friends. It isn't the cover of the Rolling Stone, but it's as much as an old man can expect

Hey Mark. This is a fun number with a great story. Your vocals and lyrics not only make me feel the pain but also the appreciation to your PT. The horns sound great. I hope that your back is doing better --- I certainly can empathize with this ailment. Freddy J

You're a one off Mark! You could never be accused of writing cliched lyrics..'therapist...Budapest'..indeed..love it. Really good chorus, that sits just right. If I was being picky I might suggest a little re-working of the first verse lyrics to make them flow as well as the second verse, but hey..no big deal.

Mark This was a fun tune. Hope you get manipulated back to health. I've had those lower lumbar blues myself. Makes you walk funny.

Thanks, Freddy. I can see I'll do horns again, but I think I need a midi keyboard to toy with. James, I agree the first verse doesn't flow as well. But the song really started as a sort of inside joke, and ended up being a solid arrangement. Funny how it works. Pogue, Mark, Strat and Frank. Thanks for listening, fellas. Now: on to the next one!

hey great fun. well played and sung. the bass line really drives this song on well! the brass and guitar licks need to come up a bit as people have said. as does the lead. there is a fine basis for a great song here though!
