Setting Tempo

I've looked in the Garrigus book about setting Tempo changes, but I'm not figuring this thing out.   I have a song that's currently running 120bpm.   I want to change it to 110bpm.   I went to Insert > Tempo.   Something like a piano roll came up, but I don't understand how to change the tempo with it.  If I click on it, it changes only part of the tempo.

I want to change the whole tempo of the song, not just pieces of it.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Greg,

To set the initial tempo for a project, you can use the Tempo view by choosing Views > Tempo from SONAR's main menu. Or even easier, just input a tempo into the Transport module on the Control Bar.

    Thanks for reading my book!

To ajust the overall tempo, it is easily done from the transport area, as shown in the graphic.

    Hi Scott -
That's not working for me.  I tried setting the tempo by inserting 110bpm into the tempo view on the control bar.   With the song I already have recorded, it will run 110bpm until the song begins, then it automatically goes back to 120bpm.

I'm having a problem to get the whole song to stay at 110bpm.

    Thanks!

NoahRane:  That's what's not working for me.   I've done that....several times.  But when the song begins, it goes back to 120bpm.   I don't know how to change the tempo for the  whole song.

    Thanks!

    Hi Greg,

Then it sounds like you may have multiple tempo changes in the project. Choose Views > Tempo to open the Tempo view. In there you can remove the excess tempos leaving only the first one, which defines the entire project tempo.

Check out the section in my book that covers all the features of the Tempo view.

That allows you to draw in the tempo with a pencil. Kind of hard to do. That's good for accelerandos.  Click on the Tempo List button and you can tell it the tempo and the measure and beat to change it.

Edit: To change the whole song, just enter it in the Tempo field in the toolbar.

I was just about to say that there must be another setting that is being missed. I learned something too today; thanks!

I was just going to post that I know what the problem is.  When I open Insert>Tempo and the piano roll view comes up, there is a line already drawn.   It's at 110bpm until the song starts, then it goes up to 120bpm.

How do I get rid of that line?

    Thanks for all the input!

To the right of the pane with the tempo line in it should be another pane that lists individual tempo changes and the measures at which they occur. If you don't see that pane, find the pane divider at the righthand edge of the Tempo View, and drag it left. Then you can select and delete everything after the first entry:

    1:01:000 120.00

Alternatively, you can just drag in the timeline at the top of the Tempo View to select the area where the change to 110 occurs, and hit delete.

Glad to help. But I don't want to take all the credit. You got a lot of good input here.
One thing I'll add since I didn't see it mentioned:

The way a project commonly ends up with unintended tempo entries is when part of the project is copied and pasted later in the project with Tempos checked in the copy dialog.
