Factory Yoyo presents: Sunshine Silver Superstar

I was thinking the other day about that big hit "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster The People. It blows me away that this weird little alt-rock tune I heard back in April on some whacky college station is now in heavy rotation on pop radio with Rhianna and Lady Gaga. What is really interesting to me as a musician/producer is that the entire song is one progression, so you know that it sports a genius arrangement that gets huge mileage out of a simple riff. What is even more interesting is that my wife actually wanted it on her iPad.

That being said, last Friday I decided to try my hand at a similar song structure. Overall, a lot different sound and feel from my other stuff. I find it kinda hypnotic, but I will ask you to listen with an open mind, and perhaps take an additional listen or two to get in the mood. Or not!

    yep, that was different....

It sounded pretty good... no crits on it at this point... just listening.  So far everything in the production sounds pretty decent.

Is that you singing?  Somehow you almost sound different on every song you do, which is a pretty distinction I suppose.  :)  Anyway, yeah, this is cool.  The key change was a nice, well, change too.  The whole thing made me smile.  Now if your wife wants THIS on her ipad too, you know you've really scored.   :)

Not my fav Yoyo hit, it has a strong B52s vibe (which is not a bad thing) something about it just didn't blow my skirt up. But I'm listening to your art on laptop speakers :-(

I have to be honest, I heard this yesterday and thought it was definately not my favorite FactoryYoYo hit.  I didn't like the guitar sound mostly.  However, after giving it a listen with fresh ears today I am digging it.  The guitar tone fits and the song came together for me on a second listen.

Great diversity in your music James, nice job

    Hello James,
I had to listen several times to really appreciate this piece. Out of the box original and great production on the vocals. Love the change at 1:42 and the synth slide at 2:38.
My only nit pick are the way the drums are sitting. I don't know if they are sitting to forward or if they are too dry compared to the other effects used on this mix. Maybe it's just me!
GREAT piece of original music, KUDOS!

    James,

Very pro sounding, and creative.  This is the type of song I usually envision  in a movie soundtrack at a point where some action or plan is being executed.   Like some of the music in Quentin Tarantino movies or even a pop action movie like Charlie's Angels.   I thought it was pretty good.   I think as a radio play pop tune the tempo would need to come up some... but well done.  The synth's are super cool and really like the vocals.   Mix is perfect.

This is just strange enough to be cool.  The production is top notch and the mix is good.  I wish I could sing like that but it would rip my thoat out.  Vocals on key.  Love that bridge at 1:42

You continue to push yourself - well done!

I have to agree with Robby -- other than they dominant synth and change up, this does have a B-52's feel to it.  Except, this is more cool.  It all sounds good to me.
    Nice one!

    Hey, James,

This is really cool sounding and very creative, albeit a little different than your usual stuff!

The production is clean and modern sounding, and I really like the synth choices and arrangement.  The changeup around 1:40 was definitely cool and broke up the song nicely leading into the second half.

I really like the vocals and the variations, but wonder if they would stand out a little better if your brightened them up a bit with just a touch of "sparkle" on the high end.  Of course, that's just a subjective eq choice, but it might be worth a try to find out.

Anyway, very unique and very good results from your experiment, James!  You're turning into the forum's "Mad Scientist" of music!

Really nice work, have a good one, buddy!

Nice one James, very creative as always. I like that trem guitar, very atmospheric. That key change was genius Good riff, got a little Gimme Shelter feel.

Man I love it...I'm a big collage radio guy....so walking the road less traveled is my normal course......love the :143 change...... Around the 2:40 mark I would have liked to hear the vox-line move to more of a chant in that I'd introduce more and bigger fvox along with hand claps to create a party like stratosphere....then pear it down towards the end and have it fall off... great work James!

    Interesting song.

I can see this at the meat markets as a something people would like. Probably with it's own moves.

    Nice job!

    Frank, Herb, Kev1, Robbie:

    Thanks guys.

    DSKev:

I hear you on the dry drums...I spent a lot of time making it fit, and the more verb on it, the more it slipped away from me. I was going for a really dry feel.

    BIAB:

To be honest, I thought this was one of my best mixed tunes ever, so just goes to show ya...

    Mark, Daryl, Freddie:

    Good comments, thanks.

    Bob O:

The vox are LPF about 4k and HPF around 700hz, so there is absolutely no sparkle. Was going for a different lo-fi sound.

    Jamesg, Pima:

    Thanks.

    Tom me brudda:

You know how I like to write tunes: it was absolutely killing me to not do what you suggested...cuz that was exactly my thinking...however, I was trying to go for something a bit edgier and non-linear, so it was thrown out. Glad you loved it.
