Burning CDs

At one time, I would always pay to have CDs pressed because duplicated CDs were not reliable in all players. All computers would play them. Some jam boxes would and some wouldn't. Some cars would play duplicated CDs and some would not. What is the current state of the art on duplicated CDs, and is there a brand, color, or formula that is reliable in 99% of the players? It is making less and less sense to pay to have a large number of CDs pressed instead of duplicating them in a project studio's 10-position burner? Thoughts?

All modern CD players will play CD-R discs. Just be sure to burn the disc using DAO (Disk-At-Once) mode and be sure the disc adheres to the Redbook standard. The professional software Sony CD Architect is currently the best burning software, but the consumer-level Nero software also works nicely. Taiyo Yuden is one of the best brands for CD media.

Thanks, Scott. The last time I sold duplicated (burned CDs) was about 10 years ago and I got about 5% returned, always from people with old jam boxes (so far as I know). The CD would play but would skip on some tracks. Never heard of Taiyo Yuden but I will check it out. 90% of people download now, but some people still want the physical product—even if they download as well. (I believe in giving download rights to people who order the media.)

I always use the AUDIO CD's and everything works fine.

I have had issues in the past with using a data CD for audio...I don't know why, but not all of them would play on all my players. With the Audio disks, and using the finalize feature on the disk, they all do just fine.

Guitarhacker (Herb), I went to your website and listened to a few tracks. They are very well recorded and mixed, and you get good drum, piano, and guitar sounds. Nice work.

The burn speed is also an issue.  My "standard" is 8X.  12X is usually OK.  16X, which is the lowest that the newer SATA interface drives will go down to is marginal.  On most new/newer audio CD players and especially the ones that are also MP3 compatible the burn speed isn't usually a problem.  However older audio players don't like higher speeds and even some will skip or not play 16X burned discs.

I have a bank fo 5 PATA (IDE) interface drivers connected via USB for CD burning.  The PATA drives I have will burn at 8X.  I use Nero "Burning ROM" burning program.

I also use good quality CD-R's such as Taiyo Yuden or Ritek.  I avoid Memorex discs.
