Audio Interface /Soundcard

Hey everyone:

Time for an upgrade! I have been running 32 bit Sonar forever. Currently on X1... I have a new PC on the way that is obviously 64 bit... tons of ram and a nice processor. I currently use the Sonar Power Studio 2 in 2 out 24 bit unit and am looking to upgrade. I was looking at the NI Komplete Audio 6 unit and would really like to hear your thoughts about what you are using and what you recommend? I do not have firewire on the new system so Presonus is probably not an option. I really appreciate this forum and your thoughts!

Thanks and have a great one!

James

The Roland Unit looks nice and the price is fine. I see you use the MOTU product. Would you switch if you could or stasy with The Mark?

The next audio interface I get will be:

    -RME Fireface 800

    -Avid MBox Pro

I had planned to get the RME Fireface 800, but I just found out about the MBox Pro and I read and watched good reviews for it, and it sounds impressive, but at a considerable lower price than other high-end units.

Take the MBox listening challenge: http://apps.avid.com/mbox-challenge/

    Yes, the Octa-Capture.

There are reports of a hum/buzz on the DI input for the Quad-Capture. It's not been reported to be an issue with the Octa-Capture.

    EDIT:

The RME Fireface UFX is the USB version of the Fireface 800.

If it means enough to you, you can always get a PCI/PCIe firewire card. The MBox Pro may be a great bargain. I'm still investigating. The MBox Listening challenge compares some great high-end units. It's certanily worth a listen.

I have a MOTU 828 MK II and two Roland Octa-Captures. I can highly recommend the Roland units. I have no buzzing issues although that only has been reported for Hi-Z inputs. I only use mine for keyboards. My MOTU was a good unit but I love that I could strap the two Octa-Captures together for 16 channels in ASIO mode. The drivers are very solid and very fast.
I put together a thread in this forum about configuring the Octa-Captures which might be helpful. I am sure if you search for Octa-Capture it will come up. You can avoid a lot of potential issues if you read it. I am very good at making mistakes ;-)

Thanks Beat I will look for that. As far as mistakes... I have made plenty of those since my days of analog fun in the studio... I still have stacks and stacks of old recording equipment in the basement gathering dust. Maybe they will be worthless to somebody someday!

I have been using the Alesis Multimix Firewire 16 for several years. Once I got it set up (some things I needed to figure out - learning curve), i have been in love with it. it's a mixer and a sound card in one. they make the same thing now but in a USB 2 version, which is the way i'd go if i were to buy one now. i like to use it to record jam sessions, and it allows me to simultaneously record 12 instruments at a time (8 mono, 4 stereo) as well as the main mix. very handy. very nice. latency is good, and sound quality is also quite good. one knock on this unit is that the fire wire sends the signal to the computer "pre eq" for individual channel recording, which seems a waste of good eq if you ask me. most of the recording i do, however, is one track at a time, so i record the Main Mix out, and could take advantage of the eq that way (moot point, though, since i do most eq'ing after i record anyway). anyhow, those are my two cents. feel to to contact me with more questions if you like. cheers
