Some Questions
Hello, I am currently a Reaper user but am still in the testing process. However, I saw that Music Creator is 40$ at my local Staples and I'm curious if it would be good enough for me (instead of paying the 60$ for the Reaper). I am mostly composing Ambient music; I use some VST synths and combine the music with field recordings. The sound quality is very important though. So for me to see if Music Creator is good enough I want to ask: 1) does it support VST instruments well? 2) is it able to import/export wavs good? 3) is the sound quality lower than other DAWs (like Reaper)? 4) can it edit audio? I saw that it has some editing abilities, can anyone explain what exactly they are (i'm interested in fade out/in, time stretch, pitch change) 5) can you create bits in it? 6) is it very resource hungry? I don't have a very computer and also, it is not connected to the internet. 7) are there any mastering tools such as EQ, compressors? 8) does it have music notation? I am also curious what the differences are between Sonar X1 editions and the Music Creator. I am not a sound engineering, so please don't go too hard on technical details. Thank you in advance.

1.Yes 2.Yes 3. No, quality is just as good. 4. Yes...all that. 5. Bits? You mean clips? Yes 6. No. 7. Yes 8. Yes but limited. MC6 looks like X1 in it's GUI. MC is a very nice program. I used it for about 4 years before I recently upgraded to X1. It is limited to 2 inputs at a time and 48 audio tracks and 256 midi tracks, however most computer will run out of resources and CPU's well before that maximum is reached. The big power hogs are the synths and some of the FX like melodyne and Ozone. MC6 comes with some really nice sampled synths and some loopable things too. Pretty much ready to rock straight outta the box. I would add a dedicated audio/midi external USB interface, because you don't want to try to run it on a factory sound blaster card. visit my web site and click MY MUSIC to go and listen to the stuff I record with Cake.... the top 3 on the list are recorded in X1...everything else is Music Creator 4. There is no difference in the quality. hope this helps

as these guys have already said, MC will do everything Reaper can. it's really a matter of preference or "workflow" which will work for you better. Reaper is better at some things, cakewalk is better at others. the MAIN difference between MC6 and X1 Essentials is going to be the number of simultaneous inputs you can record. you can only record 2 inputs at the same time in MC, X1 Essentials is limited only by the hardware. MC also has track, bus, synth and FX limits as well, but they're pretty generous and of course, there's work arounds for that.

First of all thank you for the fast and helpful replies. I apologize for the confusion with the "bits"; I meant to say beats:) So can you make bits with MC? I have just seen a comparison between MC and the other X1 and there are certain things that bother me. For example, I have seen that the internal mixing engine of MC is 32-bit while Reaper is 64-bit. Will that affect the quality of the songs or is not that important? Also is the 48 kHz sample rate limit affecting the sound quality? Some other things that I need and the MC seems to lack is fade in/out envelopes (at least that is what I see from the pdf comparison). I would really need this feature; can I do fades some other way? When I input the notes in the staff editor, can I export those notes as WAV file? And the last question. If I buy the Music Creator from the store, will I get in CD or DVD form? Because the computer where I want to use doesn't have a DVD reader. Again, thanks again for all your answers, I really appreciate your help.

You can fade in/out using several different methods. Every song you hear from a CD is at 44.1 kHz. The sound quality is great. I can't comment on the differences between 32- and 64-bit audio engines, though. MC 6, and all other Cakewalk DAW programs come on DVDs, not CDs. MC 6 is available as a download, but since your computer isn't connected, that won't work. If you have a friend with a computer that's connected to the internet, or has a DVD drive, use their machine to either download the program to something you can connect to your computer, like a flash drive, or copy the DVD to it then load it on your computer. You're allowed to make 1 copy of the program for archiving. Welcome to the forum.

Ok, after research and reading all your great comments, I have decided to buy MC6. It definetly looks like a very capable DAW, with all the features I need and some that are not present in Reaper (staff notation and matrix view, which I really appreciate) and it has an amazing price. But one last question. As I mentioned, the PC that I want to use it on does not have a DVD reader or an online connection. However, I do have a computer at school from which I can transfer the data from the DVD onto a USB. But does MC come as a single .exe file? My only concern is that on the computer without the DVD it will say "Please insert the DVD" when I try to run the program. Also, after I buy the MC can I also get the download verison of it? All the best and thanks, vvvvv

I believe it is 3 seperate download files, When I DLed it on this computer (my DAW isn't connected to the net) I copied the files to DVD then loaded them on the DAW computer. They are huge files. Took me 10 hours to DL the whole thing. Once loaded and extracted, you run the first file and it begins; it never asked or told me to insert a disk. If you buy the DVD at a store, it should autoplay when you put it into the computer. Copy it to your chosen media (whatever your home computer can use) then load it on your computer. Then delete it from your school computer to be in compliance with the TOS. Once it is registered with Cakewalk, if you lose or don't make a copy of MC to archive, you may be able to go to your account info and download another copy. That may be up to the support folks. I don't know if you can download it if you didn't DL it to begin with.

I thnk Greg is correct. one file is the documentation and other stuff, and 2 of the files are the actual program and samples. one of those is a dot exe and the other is a zipped rar file that the exe can open. I too have it on a non internet computer....so I had to use a USB stick large enough to handle it all.
