Record from external USB interface?
Hello, Back in the day (about a month ago), I was converting my MIDI tracks into audio tracks by recording "What You Hear" in Windows XP volume controls using the internal sound card. Now I'm using an AudioBox USB to playback my audio, listening via the headphone jack in the external interface. The problem is that I don't have any related recording options in my Windows volume controls. Attempted recordings in Sonar (Essential) result in a flat line track. Do you know of a setting to make this work? Do I need to record using my internal sound card? Do I need to "loop back" the external interface "Main Out" plugs back into the interface somehow (and if so, does that provide the same quality as just using my internal sound card)? I look forward to your thoughts. Thanks for the assist in advance! Best regards, Chris

Forget Windows. Set Sonar to use the external sound card.

Love it!! Any thoughts on where to get started? I've been playing with preferences and the mixer. Not quite sure where to set this. So far, no results.

Ok, I think I have a solution figured out. If I create an audio track and select one of the synth tracks as the input for the console piece for that audio track, I can hit the "freeze track" button and it mixes it all down into an audio track. Cool! I have troubles if I try to select more than one synth track at a time as the input... so I won't do that. Not sure if what I said made sense but let me know if you have additional ideas. For now I should be good to continue.

Why on earth do you need to do MIDI-to-audio in such a clumsy way? Why don't you bounce or freeze like the rest of us - the way it's designed to be done? Or is the problem that you use the Microsoft wavetable synth (which is poor), which can't be bounced? If so, why are you using it? What produces the sound from the MIDI?

Maybe it's a part of the concept? Funky 8-bit 80s sendoff? In that case go with the internal sound card and microsoft midi, and my hat's off to your sir for the idea... Otherwise, KR has a good point. If you go to the track menu, you can bounce it down, which is how it's designed to work. Freezing works pretty well too, as you've found discovered. Good luck!

As far as setting up the external to record, you need to go to options/audio and make sure that the external is the only drivers in use.

OH MY GOODNESS! I found the Tracks -> Bounce to Track(s) option. It just made life very wonderful. Thanks for supplying the key words I was missing. I'm good to go now. :)

I'm not being unkind, but you need to spend a LOT of time with the manual and working through the tutorials. Sonar is a MASSIVE program and the more you know about it, the better you'll get at using it. And the better you get at using it, the quicker your projects will come together.

My Ferrari has an engine!!"
