Key Bindings
Is there any plan to overhaul this process? I'm very slowly adding my "must-haves" back in and it is painful to sift through a list of nearly 300 bind-able actions in the Global list alone -- they are not searchable, nor in alphabetical order, so we have to scroll through dozens of pages in a tiny dialog box window. Steinberg was nice enough to include a search function in Wavelab 7's keybinding assignment dialog box and X1 would certainly benefit from something similar.

I agree. I've always felt the keybinding utility was a bit amateur, frankly.

It's right up there with the drum map editing window. Remember if you are moving from 8.5 to X1 that you can export them from 8.5 and import to X1 which may speed it up a bit.

Even that can get squirrelly, since so many of the new ones are supposedly "Better" and "Make more Sense" Bulk dumping in the entire batch of 8.5 keybindings would give me a mishmash of old and new (messing up a bunch of the new). This simply forestalls the day I can get up to speed on these supposed improvements.

Mods are the way to go. It shouldn't be that difficult to make an external UI that can display the choices in a better way (like nested menus instead of flat), and pump those back into where the data lives so Sonar can use it. Sure, we all want a nice unified interface that works well, and hanging these external mods off of the main app does look a little wonky, but I'm convinced for monolithic (in terms of size and difficulty to recode) programs like Sonar would do much better in the end allowing enterprising users to do end-runs around the interface for functional purposes. If the mod is truly a great idea, CW can either just let it be, or replicate the functionality in a future version. Everyone wins. This post inspired by Benstat's work on toolbar functionality, panup's work on the interface (he's not just doing colors folks, it's an accessibility issie), and FBB's work on the mackie protocol. There's others too, and I thank them all. Keep up the end-runs folks!

I'm both for and against mods -- though not "against" in the sense of "don't make them/use them", but in the sense that you can't be sure they will be relevant upon receive product updates, etc. This proves out often. Sonar gets updated, mods need updating. Now there are multiple sources that need to be contacted and dealt with just to run the software. I personally have not installed any MODS and have no intention of doing so. That's just my preference. I know others really like them and use them. I just don't want more headaches and it seems to me, no matter how good the mods are, there are just too many variables as it is and dealing with yet more sources seems less worth the effort for me personally.

I think Cake should man up, pay the two guys for their hard work, and 'officially' incorporate their mods into the software. Problem solved, everyone's happy. Simples. I should be World President.

I should be World President. Heh, while I agree that would be an interesting solution ... I wouldn't want to deal with the internal politics of doing so. Think about it ... "we paid some users to help us program our flagship product more to the liking of our user base" kind of thing ... not sure how that would go over ;)
