I downloaded the demo last week and have been trying it out. I think that just purely latency-wise there is a close tie when I compare Sonar 8.5.3 to S1. I don't feel that same way with Sonar X1 (I don't exactly know why, but for some reason I get a lot more audio engine stops). I have to increase my latency to prevent that from happening.
Like others have said, I think the real surprising thing about the S1 audio engine is truly having gapless audio streaming. That alone sets it ahead (for me). Not having to stop the playback (or just having it stop on you when you are trying to drop something in place) is pretty impressive.
I do hope Sonar folks read this stuff and get what we are seeing. We want Sonar to be as rock solid as a few of its competitors. With their new workflow and a true gapless audio engine that would really put them in a good position.
Now, I'm NOT saying you can't make music or make money with Sonar. You absolutely can. There is nothing wrong with the current version beyond the oddities (like so many audio engine dropouts I can't explain and lack of gapless audio) in my opinion.
