VST settings aren't saved to project?

With some VSTs, whatever settings I've made in the instrument's control panel won't save with the project. Everything is fine while I'm working on it, but as soon as I close it and try and re-open it, the VST has reverted to default settings. Obviously I can save snapshots and then reload them manually, but is there a workaround that would store the VST settings to a project so that it loads automatically?

What VSTs in particular?   Is it true for ANY project you use those VSTs or just one project having the trouble?

When you say they revert to default settings, do you mean the "name" of the preset defaults or ALL the actual controls/settings default?

I ask that because some VSTs don't seem to remember Sonar's "user preset" upon reloading but the actual settings of the synth are correct.

Example:   I save a preset called "Now" and save/close the project.   I relaunch and reload the project and the synth comes up with whatever it's own default preset generally is - but it does not say "Now" in the preset field.   So one might think it didn't actually load the settings.   But, often in fact, it did but just doesn't show the preset change in the field.

So I'm wondering if this is what you're seeing?

I've seen it with other VSTs, but two I can name right now are TweakBench Triforce (Freeware) and Plogue Chipsounds. I am having the opposite problem of what you've described: in my case, the preset "name" will be remembered, but the sound will be whatever the VST's default is.

Did you select the bank and patch in the track?

I did not previously have the bank/patch selected, as I usually use simple instrument tracks. I split the tracks and tried saving the patch MIDI data, but to no avail. Anything else I can try?
