Old system is gone. Old files don't work on new system. HELP!

OK here is my story. Been doing tracks for 3 years for a friend of mine for his duo. He is a pharmacist by day but always wanted to me a musician. I went out (with his money) and got him the gear he I thought needed to do it right. Got 2 firewire laptops, 2 MOTU Ultralite mkIII, and 2 Yamaha Motif racks. I have a MOTU 2408 mkI and Sonar 6 at home for recording so he went and got Sonar 6 for the laptops and all was well. I put back vocals and horn parts on the tracks, saved them as bundles and saved them to his machines. Well about a year ago he was diagnosed with brain cancer and couldn't gig anymore. I stepped in and played when I was free and all was well. Unfortunately he passed about a week ago and his family is not very cooperative and basically wants retail to buy the USED gear. So it's time to go get new gear. Firewire laptops don't grow on trees anymore so I will get some I7 laps with 8gig and run softsynths since me being a musician doesn't have pharmacist money laying around to get Motifs. Will stay with the MOTU and get the new Hybrid Ultralite mkIII and run USB2.0. Now is where the problem starts.

I am still getting the money together for the new gear purchase. I have a year old I3 laptop with Win7 64 on it and 4gig. I install Sonar 6 on it and the old bundles. The files won't open. I get the following error.

Unexpected Error Code.
hr: 2359296261, File:
HRESULT: 3221225747

The files won't even load in safe mode. I thought maybe is was a version mismatch or something as the disk I found was just 6.0. I uninstalled 6.0 and installed Sonar 7.0 64bit. Got the same error but this time the files WILL load in safe mode. Some of the horn and vocal samples are there and some aren't. Some play just fine, some sound like they are underwater. Some just look like unrecorded samples (straight line no waveforms). Now granted this is out of a stock Toshiba soundcard (Realtek). Thought maybe drivers might not be quite right so I download updated soundcard drivers and got ASIO4ALL driver as well. Same problem. Now on my original home computer that everything was done on, I used 16 bit depth @44.1k. The soundcard drivers defaulted to that and the ASIO4ALL driver defaulted to 24bit depth.

My question is shouldn't the files open no matter what the soundcard type is? I tried going back to the home computer, saving a file to memory stick, and trying to load on the laptop thinking maybe when I saved ALL the files to portable HD that maybe something happened to save wrong. Same result. Will this clear up when I get the new laps and interfaces in or is this something else? Any suggestions or ideas would be deeply appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Lee,
yes, the soundcard itself should not matter as to whether the files open or not.  I've never seen that type of error code.  did that error have a cakewalk header on a popup window?

I would try reinstalling S6 and then go and install the patch fixes for S6 and see if that helps.

are the files opening on the home computer fine? - I'm not 100% clear on that.

I was hoping you would be one of the ones replying. I see your name and knowledge all over the forums. Yes on the computer they were originally done on no problems. But the home comp has XP as did the gig laptops which I won't rebuy from the family. Oh you might get a kick out of this. The daughter of the pharmacist is taking charge of pricing and selling the gear. She put a price of $5000 for the (2) 3 year old laptops and all the work that I did. Guess she thought she could get some of the money back I charged her dad to do the songs. Back to the problem. Is this an XP/Win7 issue?

yeah, it's amazing what people will do.  I'm sure she'll eventually figure out that no one will buy it at that price.

technically she can't sell the sonar on it anyway.  it should be uninstalled before selling - that's in the EULA that he agreed to when he installed it.  it cannot be transferred.  it is licensed to him alone, regardless of death, no transfer.

anyway - it shouldn't be an XP/Win7 issue, but I don't know what else could have changed.  did you try the sonar 6 patch update?

So should I go with 6 or 7. I have both. At least with 7 the files would open in safe mode, with 6 they wouldn't even open at all. Is one more stable than the other in your opinion? Or would an upgrade to 8 or x1 run better with the newer gear. And while we are on opinions, i have narrowed it down to 2 laptops that I can put my hands on imediately. One is a Dell Inspiron I7 quad 2.0 with 8g or the other is a Toshiba I7 quad 2.2 with 8g. The dell has a half card in it and the toshiba has a media reader in it. Any suggestions or comments?

I would think that S7 would work fine, but if you have already tried that and it didn't work fully, then I would try S6 with the patches which Bristol_Jonsey has been kind enough to link for you.  try that and see if it works fully before trying anything else.

as far as a laptop you're planning on buying for gigging, I don't know much about laptops, especially for gigging, I've never used laptops or sonar that way.  The only times I use a laptop with sonar is to record when on a trip.  for backing tracks I always use an iPod or CD, but I'm transitioning to keyboard sequencer.  sorry - I digress - that doesn't help you.

Firewire laptops don't grow on trees anymore

Ah, yes, don't we all long for the good ol' days when laptops grew on trees!

My first suspicion would be that the bundle files are corrupt. Years ago we used to hear about corrupt cwb files on a pretty regular basis, leading many users to abandon them. I'd try opening a support ticket with Cakewalk in hopes they'd be able to determine whether the cwb is OK, and maybe, if you're lucky, be able to recover it.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I was thinking the same as Bit. I have read here over and over a warning not to use bundle files. So why can't you install Sonar 6 on an older XP computer, Then open and re-save as CWP files?? I was wondering if Sonar 6 even runs under 64 bit OS, I think 7 does.

    ...I uninstalled 6.0 and installed Sonar 7.0 64bit...
There is no need to uninstall one version before installing another.  Different versions of Sonar can co-exist side by side on the same system.  You can even install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of v7, as well as v6.

Sonar 6 and 7 are both very stable on my system.  However, I am running Windows XP, not Windows 7.

I sent you a PM, this a known issue with bundle files on Windows 7 with older versions of SONAR. It was not fixed until 8.5
