How to use ACT controller on external synth?

Hi all,

I have an external MIDI module (Blofeld) that I'd like to control and automate via my ACT controller. How can I use the controller to send out the correct CC numbers for recording of automation data without having to set it within the controller itself? Is it possible? Perhaps through an instrument definition file? (which I know nothing about)

Any help is gratefully received!

What ACT controller are you trying to use to control your Blofeld?

Midi data echoed back from Sonar should do what it would do to a soft synth or an external module because Sonar records and transmits the data.
CC's and controller #'s are somewhat standardized - but you would need to know what commands your module will receive and act on.  In the good ol' days devices came with a Midi Implimentation Chart - wealth of knowledge on those!

    Hi Brian,

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm using a Novation SL MkII but without Automap (causes me no end of problems). It is possible to change the mapping of the Knobs and sliders inside the Novation itself but it really isn't very convenient. I was hoping that ACT could do with external MIDI synths' CC parameters the same as what it does with softsynth parameters i.e. intelligently map them depending on focus.

A softsynth is a programme running in the PC, hence there's something for ACT to focus on. A hardware synth isn't running in the PC so there's nothing for ACT to get focus on.

It may be possible to get ACT to control a hardware synth (I've never tried), but personally I find it easiest to re-programme the controller or use the knobs on the synth. My rack MicroQ has a very similar interface to the Blofeld, and I've set up a preset in my Novation Remote so that the keyboard controls it and sends aftertouch/mod/pitch, plus a few controls set to send e.g. "breath". Other than that I work with the synth's interface.

I know the Blofeld has quite a reputation for bugs (which is the only reason I've never bought one - they sound amazing), and I can't remember if it's controls send MIDI or not, but the MicroQ sends MIDI when you turn it's knobs, and Sonar can record that MIDI then send it to the synth on playback.

I tend to record/program the notes etc. then add further MIDI CCs by overdubbing them later.

Interesting that Automap causes you problems - I've found it better than ACT in many ways. And you can set up an Automap user programme to control an external synth. The awkward bit is getting the control movements in Automap recorded in a MIDI track.
