Latency issues with midi key board

This question has probably been asked many times on this forum so I apologizes but couldn't find any thing when I serched
I'm having a Latency issue when I press the keys to when I hear the note. I'm useing an E-MU Xmidi 1x1 - MIDI adapter - USB - External. I've just downloaded
Latest drivers to see if that helps. Are there any other ideas?

Thanks, Will Kruger

Hello Will -

Through what device are you moitoring the audio sounds? If you are using the built in audio from your computer - that is the likely source of your latency.  It is almost always the audio conversion that causes latency, not the midi I/O.

Hi Brian
Thanks for replying.
I have a Tascam US-1641 The Keyboard/midi goes in to a USB slot in the back of my puter. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to go directly in to the 1641 as it has midi inputs. If so looks like another trip to the music store:-)

That would be my bet.
I have a Korg padKontrol and an Oxygen controller that do midi via USB with no issues - but they were designed for USB not adapted. I'm actually not real comfy with it, but, hey it works!
It doesn't seem to make sense that the MIDI to USB adapter wouldn't work well - but certainly going through the Tascam's MIDI ports would allow you to rule the adapter out (or in!)

Another thing you can try is to lower the buffer size for your audio interface try 64 samples or 128.

I installed the latest drivers and then went directly in to my Tascam 1641. Still the same problem. :-(
I never worried about this before as I was adding Strings and such. But know I'm adding some quick 16 notes using True Piano and this is causing a problem.

The problem you're experiencing is usually because the hardware buffer setting is not low enough.

What driver mode are you using in SONAR? If ASIO, open Preferences and go to Audio>Driver Settings and click the ASIO Panel button to lower your samples per buffer setting. Try the lowest setting and if you get dropouts, pops, or clicks with the lowest setting, go to the next lowest and so forth until you get stable playback and recording.

If you're in WDM driver mode, open Preferences and go to Audio>Driver Settings and move the Buffer Size slider all the way to the left, Apply, close, and try playing the softsynth again.

I tried your suggestion and set it to the lowest setting but still no difference. Even when I set it to the highest setting the same.

I copied some pix of my settings to the following links in maybe clarifying things. Thanks for you help I appreciate your time.
