How do you align beats to an imported audio track?

I have a choral track which I imported into Sonar x1. I would like to have the beat boundaries and tempo align to the audio track so I can add midi tracks to the audio track. I thought "fit to improvisation" would do it, but I wasn't successful. How do I do this? Thanks, Ron Williams

You can try using AudioSnap. In the Contents of the SONAR Help, choose the following topic... AudioSnap > Synchronizing audio and the project tempo.

if the choral track has a defined tempo, i recommend finding a downbeat of that track and aligning that downbeat to a downbeat on the gri as in bar 1 beat 1. then if that downbeat is not the start of the clip, slic the clip precisley on that 1. then turn on the metronome and start trying to adjust the terack tempo where it sounds like the metronome is playing in time with the audio track. when you think you have it, try to go towards the end of the audio track and play there and see if the metronome is still on. if not, keep changin the project tempo in very smalll increments.

when you get yor audio track on an actual tempo and it plays with the metronome in time throught, you can then start adding midi or audio loops in the project with the grid tuened on and get them to line up.

now, if the choral track is ot on a defined tempo throughout its performance, the only way to line up midi tracks to it is pretty much if you quantize it with audiosnap or manually byt cutting and adjusting throught it.

this is much harder to explain than to show.

I always use the "set beat now" tool available with a right click on the time line--well, that's where it is in Sonar 8.5. You just listen carefully to the music, and keep setting where the beats of each measure really are - each time you click Yes, the tempo map is automatically adjusted. Takes a little time, but it's extremely easier and less time consuming than by just listening and trying to manually insert all the tempo changes. RB

I am not as experienced as some of you with this technique but I play quarter notes on a midi track in time with the music and then convert that to a tempo map with fit improvisation.  This works good as long as I play the beats well to the music.
