New Sandy Bridge coming?

"The major points are:

  • LGA 2011 Socket , to replace LGA 1366 / X58
  • Code-named Sandy Bridge E
  • CPU TDP could possibly go up to whopping 180W <-- most likely up to 130W
  • No stock CPU coolers, coolers will be sold separately.
  • i7s are Quad or Hexa Cores, only Hexa Cores will be fully unlocked
  • X79 chipset mobos
  • Quad Channel memory (DDR3 1333) support, 66% increase in memory bandwidth from the triple channel DDR3 1066 for X58,
  • No less than 8 RAM slots / Max RAM capacity - 64GB (Can we run out of mobo real estate some day??? )
  • Natively supports dual x16 PCIe that are directly from the CPU instead of from the chipset for shortened latency
  • PCIe 3.0 likely
  • Slated for release later this year (Q4)"

I don't understand exactly how memory bandwidth works but it certainly sounds like something that will help out those of us who use large sample libraries.

    dont get too excited
we have been playing with them for awhile now. still no real audio numbers as we cant get DPC under control to get numbers under 256 buffer.

for video it was 11% faster than a 2600 which for the AVCHD to H264 test we do is actually faster than a 990x
for audio i expect about 10% over the 990x (which slightly beats the 2600 in daw bench DSP test. )

on a better note the quad ram is a pretty big jump over tri channel. like 36GB/s vs 26GB/s
FYI it takes DDR3 1600 and higher and yes 64gig support on the 8 slot boards.
32 on the 4 slot boards
PCIe3 is only on the more costly boards
(not that there is any product thats PCIe3 yet)
X79 the good more PCIe bandwidth
the bad still no legacy PCI support (and its EOL as far as intel is concerned with chipsets)
no hardware drive controller (ACH) its now all software based and takes CPU hit.

This could be a failure of imagination on my part, but I think the bleeding edge of desktop power has now shot far past what you could need in a DAW for 90% of serious projects. My current plan is to put together an i7 2600k-based rig in about a year's time, as the price is bound to drop a bit as the new stuff goes live.

    Hey John -
While I would tend to agree with  "but I think the bleeding edge of desktop power has now shot far past what you could need in a DAW for 90% of serious projects" for most users.   There are many users like me who use sample libraries for large orchestral scores and mock ups that could definately make use of a top tier system.

There are many people who are forced to use slave machines (and sometimes several machines) to run their sample libraries and video for large scores.  I am not one of those people, but I could definately make the most out of a top end machine and not feel like I bought something I didn't need.

The worst is when you purchase something and realize it cannot do what you need it to do and are forced to replace it within a year, that is a giant waste of money.

Most computer hardware that is available for purchase today is already "obsolete".  What is on the chip vendors drawing boards, and the labs and PC vendors are already working with the next generation of hardware (and maybe more than the next generation).

I was at a Dell workshop (for forum "VIP's") at Dell HQ in Round Rock Tx two years ago.  One of the things we got to see was the development labs and what they were working on.  Some of what they were working on is now in production, others are still to go into production - two years later.

I wonder when Thunderbolt ports will begin showing up in new MB's. I imagine once those become the standard  mac/pc high speed universal port of choice other I/O's like firewire will quickly become less common and fade away.

    Cheers,
