More RAM freaks out Cake

Hi gang
It's been a while.
Hey so I have Win 7 64 bit and 4 g ram.
I've had two mor 1 g sticks laying around and just put em in.
System now read 5 gig and X! and the V 700 loaded really slow acted hinky then crashed.

I pulled both the new sticks out and back to normal.
EWVer hear of that?

Def sounds like a RAM config etc issue with the MOBO. Seen it before... gotta be careful matching RAM, MOBO BIOS config etc....

Take the 4 GB out. Put the two GB in. Boot up. If it's sorta bad, take them back. They are bad. If it works... The 4GB will be incompatible with what you have now. Now, get either new memory with the same specs as what you have now or go into bios and set all banks to operate at the same clockspeed. ANd try to boot up.... If that does not work take the 2 GB out and forget it. Either get a complete 8GB set or just.... don't go any higher...

Thanks guys. Yeah I'd bet it's a bad chip. They've been laying around for quite a while.
I did a Crucial scan and will probably order a couple more 2 G sticks.

Yep, bad config or bad RAM. 18 GB here without problems.

Make sure you don't mix and match ram. Don't use parity and non parity, different speeds, etc.

Hey, Make sure to figure out what Kind of ram it is.  You can't just go putting in 1066 ddr 2 240 pin ram into DDR3 1333 or 1600 for example.  Another thing, you can't mix and match ram types either.  Generally if you have DDR3 rip jaw 1600 mhz ram, and put in some other ram like Crucial same specs, sometimes it gives you errors and such because the ram latency's and such are completely different.  One thing though, Honestly, you shouldn't need more then 8 gig's of Ram.  As for building a better Rig later, faster latency is better, and same with the processor.  So 8 Gig's of DDR3 at 1866 is better then 16 Gig's at 1333 for example.  You will get way better performance out of faster ram.
