Client wants an aif bounce..... what is 'signed 8 bit PCM' etc.....

I have been asked for 48/16bit aiff bounce, and am seeing a new dialog box option asking what kind of extra encoding options i want. Signed, unsigned, 8 bit, 32 bit, float etc........ which should I choose for a background beat for video?

48K / 16bit is the standard for DVD these days and AIFF has become the standard format for data exchange as well.  Almost all the TV work I've done in the last year has been in that format for the masters as requested by the producers of the shows.

So far the request has always wanted "signed 16bit".  So just ask what exactly they need and choose that option.

After you select "Export" in Sonar, you'll need to tell it the sample rate/bit depth and file type (AIFF of course).  Only after that will you be asked about the signed bit or float value.

The Signed 16bit is probably the right choice (usually for Video).

Thanks BA, i figured id match the 16's. Never bounced out an aif before, nor upsampled the bounce to 48. I am assuming Sonar can perform this without any hiccups.

I did close to 40 tracks (projects) in the last year and a half for which most needed AIF masters and stems.   Using 8.5.3 I never had a problem.

I can only hope (not assume yet) that X1 handles it as well, but I haven't had the need to test that recently.

It should be ok though.  Don't use dithering on the export unless you're doing the final mastering, however.   Even if you are, you may want to check with the final engineer (ie, if it's a tv show for example) if they prefer to apply the dithering at their mixdown.
