Hello,
I think you may be over-thinking this a bit unless I'm totally misunderstanding your needs. You should be fine with using a Sonitus delay on your vocal placing it on a bus and creating a send. From there, automate in real time if you want using the output sliders. Here's how I do it..
Arm the track for automation, make sure "link" is enabled on the Sonitus delay and then set your mix sliders on the delay to be what you want output wise for the delay effect. Next, move one slider all the way to the left to make the output read 0....which will move the other slider due to it being linked.
Next, click "undo" and the delay mix sliders will go back to where you had them. Then, press play, and just keep clicking undo when you want the delay in and out. Anything you mess up on...just edit the envelope it creates after you press stop on the transport.
Or, you use the send on the track for your automation leaving the delay outputs wide open at 100 instead of automating the delay output mix sliders. Either will work in the same way.
Hope this helps...best of luck.
