New system before upgrading to X1. How much memory is wize?

Before I upgrade to X1 I want to purchase a new system. Keep the old system as backup and move forward. Since prices are so low for ram I'm not sure what amount would be ridicule and what would be smart.

I could go for 16GB ram. But  maybe 8 GB ram is wizer.

I don't need anything above a quadcore. Since my current system can do anything I throw at it. I'm now at an RME Digi9636 & my DM24. And everything works like I'd like. So memory might be wize.

I am now testing the whole spectrasonics range and like the morfing it can provide. But it is 100GB of total samples so it needs it's own (fast) disk. And it will probably like some serious ram.

What is wize.

mmmm..myself I went to 16Gb ram. And, in that process found that there are a lot of things I can shove into X1 that I could not otherwise do with it.

BTW...a HDD just for samples is a good idea..considering just how many Spectrasonics and East West things can get jammed in.  That's why in my system I went for 2 2Tb Seagates.

I use multiple instances of things like Spectrasonics Omnisphere without any major issues, and I only have 4Gb RAM. Other synths like Z3TA+ 2, Sylenth etc have fairly low RAM requirements anyway.

However, Kontakt with some RAM hungry instruments like Electri6ity can cause my PC to grind to a halt. If I have a project with two instances of Kontakt/Electri6ity, it can take up to 5 minutes to open because RAM is maxed out. 3 or more, and I probably wouldn't even be able to open it! Judicious use of freezing gets around it, but I'll be upgrading my RAM next week because of this. I was thinking of 8Gb, but I'd also be interested to hear what others have to say, particularly anyone who uses large Kontakt instruments.

Edit: I use an Intel i5 quad core, which I find to be adequate for quite a few VST instruments at once (I typically use 10-15 VST synths in a project, and only tend to freeze when I run out of RAM, rarely because I'm getting low on CPU).

I find that I can use about 4 Kontakt's before I start to see a hit on CPU/ram. I'd be thinking that 16Gb should do it.

8 would probably be enough at the moment, but with 16 you will be ready for whatever great products come out during the lifetime of your new DAW.

16 GBs..., without hesitation. It's never been so affordable and accessible. Tis the "wiSe" thing to do, me thinks.

Agreed Alegria! RAM is cheap nowadays! Personally, I've always been a fan of "11" though.. It's one better than 10, isn't it?  ;o)

    Peace!

Any users with memory above 16 GB's. Just for simple music making with let's say 8 soft synths playing?
When I boot up, whole windows is like 4 GB's. So, anything beond 16GB isn't gonna speed up the booting of windows I think.

So the amount of RAM above 16 GB's, does it have some use? Besides upping the electric bill?

On a friends system it does not seem to affect his hydro bill that much. He has his at 32Gb...me? I'll be leaving mine at 16Gb for awhile yet.

There was one fellow on here awhile back who had a server set up running windows 7..and he had a large number of ram on his.
