28. Other than 64-bit support -- which is currently in development -- which UAD system features are most important to you?

I should receive the UAD-2 system in the morrow (all of it). IIRC, the 64-bit drivers are supported (per tech support), but, since UAD has its own PCIe processor(s) with DSP(?), 32-64-bit-bridges would be about as effective. I'd 'envision' vst palettes for 1) better vox processing (comps EQs tapes); 2) better mastering tools (tapes EQs maximizers); 3) increased phat for kick, bass, and/or snare. I'll try to chime in a few days or so and report on which ones inspire the most.

I said, forget 64bit. Be rebels I told them. 63.989874874...bits is good enough for The Bapu.

The Satellite is mac only. It is possible to use a PCIe-box-to Firewire converter, but you'd have to call Scott (ADK) or someone, besides Dell and HP, ... who still make firewire PCs. Myself, I've had bad luck with firewire laptops ... the firewire keeps popping off with laptop connectors ... and rebooting with the firewire gets old.

I can see no reason why its MAC only, and can find no information why its narrowed to that.I guess its really apples to apples since if I wanted a DUO or Quad Satellite I still need a PCIx slot for the FW card, so I might as well buy the PCIx UAD 2 card, depending on the buss speed of the PCI slot I can use I guess.

Yes MM100; Sonar users must use PCIe, quad, preferably. No Satellite or Solo option will work with todays PCs. And the Solo is weak, IMHO. I'm using half the DSPs up with my quad PCIe. IMHO, there are numerous UAD pluggins that Sonar users can forget ... as our natives are better for most tasks: Unnecessary bundles: Neve, Mastering, EQ Unnecessary reverbs: Dreamverb (native Sonar Lexicon is more lush and less phasy to my ears) Unnecessary delays: UAD tape delays Unnecessary equalizers: TBH my ears aren't credible; all 10 UAD equalizers have peculiar niches that I'm still learning; so I won't pass judgement. But 10 equalizers seems a bit over-kill. I gravitate to the Massive-Passive ... as it is more of a glue-tool than an equalizer (for the master or buss) Unnecessary: Most Mastering tools per se.

So, if all of these are unnecessary for Sonar users, which ones are worth using? I ask because I just got a UAD-2 Card and am tring to decide which plugins to get from them.

Yes, inquiring minds want to know! Which of the UAD Plugs are "essential"? Cecelius did you buy the mkII deal? If so how long does it take for the Duo to show up? Thanks

I quite like the dreamverb, although I have been using the Lexicon LXP more recently. I'm also a big fan of the LA2A. I haven't tried any of the new plugins, cause I'm still using my UAD 1

The best of UAD, IMHO ... in my humble 1 week of experimentation: Comp: Fairchild (comp) is on all my vox tracks: turns cr&p vox into lush meaty vox -- haha! -- Somehow UAD has perfected a better compressor than Voxformer and Nector, IMHO. Delay: Roland Space Echo, Time Cube, and Moog (yes the Moog is weird ... but great for 'stretching' a good bass guitar sample/performance) Tape: A800 Tape, Ampex ATR-102 Tape, Fatso tape Reverb: Lexicon 224 Digital reverb (you can google this to hear its excellence) EQ: Manley Massive Passive (so many sweet settings: who ever heard of an EQ that renders sweetness on multiple extreme EQ settings?) These are my current 'must-haves' due to idiot proof pre-sets and multiple sweet settings, IMHO. While there are tube emulators (i.e., Precision Maximizer), I worry they conflict with the Ampex and A800 tape emulators. So, I won't rant on their excellence and believe Ozone may achieve warm/tube emulations faster. Also, I realize some of you prefer to use tube enhancers on some tracks and tape enhancers on others; but UAD tape enhancers accomplish more 'bold-clarity'-beauty IMHO ... since they color and level the mid-upper harmonics. Tube harmonics and tape harmonics probably don't mix too well, based on your discussions in the past (techniques forum) ... on saturations. So you probably don't want to mix tube and tape saturations ... as a rule. (Please correct me if I be wrong) So UAD shines with tape emulators, IMHO. If you are a vintage king, there are other EQ, comp, and buss thingies. But this will take time for me to figure.

Cool thread Bapu. I recently picked up a UAD-1 from e-bay and am slowly trying all the demos, just enabling a few at a time. In my situation, the more DSP powered plugs I can substitute for native plugs, the better with my outdated system. So far I plan to eventually get Fairchild, Cambridge and 4k buss compressor. I also have a TC powercore MK1 on order so I'm going to wait until I've had some time to figure out what I want before spending much on plugs. Unless those UAD Christmas sales are no brainers ;) UAD-1 is no longer officially supported so I can't use some of the newer plugs as it is. I may be wrong about this but my prediction about the future of UAD development. IMO a big part of what made UAD and other powered plug-ins sound better were the fact that they were powered by the DSPs freeing up CPU usage. Now that multiple cores are so common, the DSP advantage seems much less relevant. I hear folks taking about how native plugs are catching up and some are even better. I think that is because multi core CPU's and software developers are catching up. Powercore has already announced that software and hardware development has ceased. I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear the same from UAD. I think there will possibly be native running UAD plugins in the near future. My guess is that's what there working on right now. JMO

Yeah, the UAD "pony tricks" ... these make for pro-sounding tracks and masters (IMHO) ... and are also easy to get 'carried' away into ... with mudiness from too much coloration. TBH, I never found a UAD buyer who regretted purchasing their pop plugins. Another 3 I just added are: Pultec-Pro equalizer: for 'unharsh cuts/boosts' LA-3A Audio Leveler (Limiter): "Sonic Limiter" (for 'ordinary vox' flattery) RS-1 (Part of the CS-1 Channel Strip and/or RealVerb Pro emulations): I 'discovered' the "Alone in the Dark" preset for some 'lone-vox' ambience. Having a "native" option ... for 64-bit Sonar laptop use ... might boost revenues for UAD, but the DSPs take a ludicrous toll. USB-to-PCMCIA (expressCard) adaptors exist, but may not work for the UAD-2 solo-for-laptops. Either way the DSPs easily exceed both the Solo-Card's capacity and the Win-7/64 I7 with 10Gbytes RAM. IOWs, a quad seems necessary. 2 realistic solutions I've 'encountered' 1) Lenova-Thinkpad Advanced Docking station (seems to support 1/2 size PCIe like the UAD-2 quad) 2) ADK's seemingly propietary Firewire-to-PCIe external box solution. UAD tech support has been 'unreacheable' of late, so I don't know their thoughts.
