To leave or not to leave power on interface??
Hi - I have a usb interface with plug in power. Does it really matter if the power is left on all the time or not...just keep it plugged in when not using and don't recall reading or hearing any info on that one way or another. It does not get hot....but just wondering..

I'm not sure if this is relevant to your question or not but I have two - seven slot powered USB hubs and a few other USB powered peripherals directly inserted into the PC that are mostly music related. I never leave my PC on unless I am working/ scanning for viruses/downloading huge files. I have a power switch on my Furman power conditioner that turns on both of the music related USB hubs and a power strip that connects all five of my powered monitors. I simply turn the power strip and Furman power switch on when I know that I am going to work on music and leave them off when doing PC related mundane processes. A windows bing is not that high on my priority list. YMMV.

You are doing yourself and the environment a big favor by turning off any electrical devices whenever you are not actually using them. Electronic parts age, and temperature plays an important role. Some people argue that turning devices on and off causes additional stress. This is true. And this may count if you would turn a device on and off many times a day. The typical scenario for audio interfaces is that you would tun them on and off (in average) once a day at most. If you don't turn them off, they would be used for 2-10 hours out of 24 hours per day. This will accelerate aging significantly and waste energy. What is true for audio interfaces is also true for computers. Wilko

Heat ain't the worse thing for electronics - emps and water (or beer) are worse. But it will probably shorten the life of your electronics, esp. the cheaper variety. If you are working w/ them all day it is one thing, but like Wilko sez, if you are only using them a couple of hours a day get them turned off. Power strips are a great assets, but for a usb port powered, I guess unplug it if there ain't a switch. @

Operationally it won't matter if the USB devices or their power supplies are left on or off. Other things to consider are the environment and your electric bill. But the biggest issue is with AC power problems including surges, momentary power outages, etc. Unless you have them connected to a UPS system (that is on all the time), I wouldn't even think of leaving them on when not in use.

Unless you have them connected to a UPS system (that is on all the time), I wouldn't even think of leaving them on when not in use. That is the key IMHO. I have both my internet and music computers, my monitors as well as all of my electronic instruments/hubs/mixers running off of one large UPS. Note that my systems can be on for hours at a time. Even then I shut everything down when I’m not using them. If you are going to leave your system on for any length of time IMO an UPS is a must.

I turn it all off when I'm done. I run all my computer and music gear on a surge protected UPS. I don't want spikes and brownouts getting into the gear. Either one can do serious damage. Shutting them off properly at the end of the session prevents problems. It also allows for a clean boot the next time I record.

I was lucky to be sitting in my office the day my UPS burst in to flames... I kinda carrried/kicked it out into the yard and killed it with a garden hose. That was before Win NT... when NT came out and we no longer had to worry about corrupting the OS with a power outage I simply decided I'd rather deal with an occasional outage. I have an well deserved yet totally unreasonable fear of fire ruining my happiness. anyways, mike

I use one of those "intelligent" outlet strips that kills all remaining outlets when the main one is turned off...I leave my fridge plugged in as well :)
