MC5 recording woes
I am having the dreaded issue that many others have had in the past with the recording/playback tracks bleeding into each other. I posted this issue a while back, and couldn't figure it out, so I was using other means to record, but with a decent sound card that sounds a hell of a lot better than an old 8 track recorder, its time I fixed this issue. I am running windows vista 64 bit, and have a sound blaster x-fi titanium hd sound card and have it set up to use the asio drivers, which sound very good over everything else. I hook my guitar into the mic port on the soundcard directly, or keyboards, or an actual mic. I have also painfully read many forums trying to find ways around this issue, and have obviously been vanquished each damn time. I have disabled the What U Hear option, checked every internal/external connection, the stereo mix jazz (I think I read that somewhere), and about everything else (except what to actually do). I have noticed that when I arm a track, and hit play with a previous track already recorded without hitting record, that the input level on the track armed matches the playback track, and I really can't figure out why. Many apologies for this painfully long post, but I hope that through these many words someone can give me assistance and tell me I'm an idiot because all I needed to do is....................

The sound blaster is not the best card to use for recording. It might be a premium SB card, but it does not do what we need it to do. A USB music specific interface is the optimal route for a recording card. They are sold mainly at music stores with audio/recording departments. Price range is $100 to $300 many higher, some are lower. Look at Beagle's web site, he has some info there to help you get the right one the first time. www.beaglesound.com You really must have the right tools for the job at hand, and the SB card is like showing up to a construction site with a set of "Daddy's Little Helper" plastic tools and expect to work. Of course, that might be a bit extreme for an example, but you get the point.... the right card makes all the difference in the world..... and yeah I saw that the card uses ASIO drivers, that's good, but the card itself needs to be capable. Sound Blasters do video and games and MP3's just fine, but they can not deal with life in a DAW. In addition, I don't think that you will find MIDI inputs on them. MIDI is very important when recording a keyboard. In that case, you almost always want to choose midi over audio. It's so much easier to edit and work with.

disabling what u hear should have done it. if that doesn't do it then I don't know what else could be the problem unless you're using 2 different soundcards or you have your physical output routed back to an input using a cable.

Can you post some screen shots of your track panes showing the inputs and outputs, plus shots of your MC Options>Audio showing Record and Playback Timing Masters, Driver Mode and Drivers? Plus some shots of your SB's mixer, options and preferences? We can't see what you see, and there might be a simple routing mistake, setting or option that's causing this. http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2299538

Thanks for responding and giving me the harsh dose of reality. It really sucks when I thought the sound card could handle games and music recording, but I have learned that you can really only have one, not both. But I did put up a few screenshots of my main audio screens, being a few for music creator and system sound stuff. Hopefully someone can look at these pics and realize I just forgot to click on that one stupid option to make everything better (at this point I'm sadly optimistic). Thanks alot to all those who have responded quickly, and hope these pics shed some more specific light on this absolutely annoying as @%$# problem. http://www.flickr.com/photos/64424677@N02/

The only rhing I could see was under Options>Audio where it reads Creative Mix FL... what other options are available when you click the drop-down arrow? Try changing that to something else. Unfortunately, the shots showing your MC tracks were too small and not expanded enough to read what the tracks's ins and outs were. But try changing that 'Mix' thing. While mix might sound like a good thing, often it means the entire mix, sorta like What You Hear.

Ok Gregy, I tried playing with the mix options for the recording inputs, and it did make it so the track doesn't bleed into the recording track, but of course, because nothing can ever be that simple, now I can't get any signal to record anything. I know it has to have something to do with theses options though, but now I just need to know what to do to be able to get the mic input to record. I posted two more pics that show the options in the drop down menu for the Options>Audio. We're getting closer! http://www.flickr.com/photos/64424677@N02/

You might have to change the inputs in the tracks to whatever you changed them to in Preferences.

I don't know what MIX FL, MIX RL, MIX FC, MIX RC or SL mean and that could very well be your problem. do you know what the differences are in those options?

I also have no idea what the different mix options represent, but I have tried to use each one to see if it would work, but sadly only the MIX FL lets me record anything through the mic port. But when I use that option, thats when the playback tracks bleeds through, so I am at an impass. Unless I have to change some things around in the windows control panel for the mic settings?

I'm guessing: MIX FL, Front Left MIX RL, Rear Left MIX FC, Front Center MIX RC, Rear Center SL, Sub Left Can you change to stereo mode?

no, the drivers from the soundblaster are read directly by MC. there shouldn't be an parameter you'd have to set in windows that would be something that MC needs in order to stop the what you hear function.

you could try ASIO4ALL and then change your driver mode to ASIO and see if that helps. if that doesn't help, then the only advice I have for you is to get a "recording" soundcard. I have recommendations on my website.

hello. For what it's worth, here's my input. I tried to record with my comp sound card but the results were not great as i got a lot of hissing when i recorded. The solution to my problem, and i think it may be yours too, is to get a USB interface.I have a Lexicon Omega. This plugs into your USB port and you plug your instrument into the front (or back) and record through this onto MC5. The advantage is that the signal processors are built to take instruments and mics and there is no hissing and its recorded crystal clear. that's what i reccomend anyway. jason

hello everyone ! ..just got MC5 a few weeks ago ..many years spent on multi track recorders ..and now i am getting frustrated at MY incompetence to understand - and the BIG diff -with straight forward multi track. Anyway ..main prob ? i just cant plug in my amplitube rig ! Probably somthing simple right ! I am fully registered and licenced -so no issue there ..."waiting for hardware device " is all i get. I click all the buttons on the rig -like a 5 year old would .....nothing. I have a YAMAHA audiogram 3 interface ...and do get a nice clean dry sound {although i cant adjust vol -level....which is another minor problem } I am the worlds most stupid person -so speak to me like the fool i am . If you would be so kind ,thanks.

hi mixymo - actually you should have started a new thread, not added onto this one. your problem is a completely different problem than what jpelder has. what is the model number of the amplitube rig you're trying to get to work? is it connected by USB? how are you trying to get it to work? inside MC5? or standalone? I assume there's some software you've installed for it?
