SteveStrummerUK offnote I mean come on, those guys from U2 barely could play on their instruments... What does that have to do with the price of cheese? And where do you draw the line between who can and can't 'play'? Cheese is $1.99 a pound here .. I don't know what it is in your currency though .. pounds - euros - slugs - stouts - chris cross apple sauce or whatever currency but here - any cheese you want .. one dollar and ninety nine cents per pound - oh and by the way - that might be confusing to you because, here in the states pounds are not currency - pounds are weight .. like ounces - - so when cheese cost $1.99 a pound, I could see how someone over the pond could get confused. actually -- i really don't even know how much cheese cost here - I just made it up

craigb In the middle of a concert in Ireland, U2 stopped playing and Bono began clapping his hands, slowly, rhythmically as the crowd grows quiet... "Everytime I clap my hands, a child dies in Africa" Bono proclaims. After a brief silence, a voice from the crowd yells "Then stop fooking doing it!!!"
I like this joke. I may, at some time in the future, go back in time and steal it. >>>>>TIME MACHINE NOISES<<<<< Oh bugger. I'm back from the future/past etc and I didn't get what I wanted. I just haven't found what I'm looking for..... However, there is some other news. On my trip, I purchased the U2 version of Monopoly. But I have to say, it's proper sh1te - completely impossible to play.... Altogether now...... The streets have no names.

Just so you know, you can have that joke. (The Welsh didn't understand completely and created a tribute band called 2U...)

I never really understood what the big deal was with U2. Sure they had a few good songs, but I honestly feel that they haven't written anything note worthy in the last 10-15 years. I think like most things these days, and particularly in the music biz, it's mostly hype over substance now. If you look at many of the popular 'so-called-artists' that are the most famous & successful now & for the last little while, many of them have little to no discernable talent, but are instead easy to package and brand. I like what 'Shaggy' said in an interview many years ago: "If it were up to talent alone, most of us wouldn't be here", and he included himself in that fray. Now that's a guy I can respect! 2 other good examples that immedialetly come to mind are Cold Play - which I think are just average, but are actually touted as the 'best band in the world' right now???; and michael buble - whom I struggle to measure as anything past mediocre at best, with a less-than-average singing voice, especially since he doesn't play any instruments or write any songs. How & why he is counted as 'super star' status is way beyond me, and easily the 8th wonder of the world, considering that there are so many 'talented people' out there who DO actually play AT LEAST 1 instrument, usually while singing no less, AND write their own songs, and yet we'll probably never hear of them because these others are constantly crammed in our faces way to much, and super-promoted as 'excellent and even beyond' - and many people buy into it. That's were much of the problem lies - people take what is sold to them as a bill of goods and all too easily accept it as 'great', instead of holding out & demanding better for themselves and others.

I never thought any of the Pink Floyd guys are exceptionally good musicians. According to what I've heard, most guitarists don't rank Jimmy Page in the top ten of all time rock guitarists. It's the ideas and sense of style that counts. It's the live shows, IMO, that reveal the greatness of U2. Especially Bonos singing, especially live, is the key of the whole brand. I've never been a U2 fan, really, but the live shows have impressed me every time (read:DVDs). And in general: It's usually about being in the right place at the right time. If a band/artist fills a gap or otherwise answers the demands/needs of a particular era, and has capacity to struggle on, it gets a head start to long lasting success. And anyway, the exceptionally skilled ones (technically) usually make exceptional music, which you don't find in the charts. You need to look it up for yourself. The way I see it, Michael Bubblé is a superstar only in the marketing lingo, based on sales figures, and in the minds of his fans, who like nice, safe, conservative, well made mediocre stuff. He could be replaced by 100 000 other guys equally good. Cold Play is a bit difficult case in my opinion. I sometimes compare it to Steely Dan. Very well made, but really dull for my taste. Even though Steely Dan concentrates more on the perfection in studio.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

This is another old thread. Jimmy Page not in the top ten? Do a google search of the top 10 guitar players some time. The dozen or so I checked ranked him from 3rd to 9th, but always in the top 10. The Edge wasn't in the top ten on any of them. Hendricks was most often #1. Clapton was always in the upper top. The one that surprised me most was how often Robert Johnson was mentioned. I guess I need to sit down and listen the RJ one of these days.
