RME UFX: URGENT HELP NEEDED - Experiencing dropouts after failed firmware/Driver upgrade

Hello folks,

I am in urgent need of some help.  I can't get my UFX to work properly after trying to unsuccessfully perform a driver and firmware update (I use Firewire port but realize updates take place via USB port, etc.).   I have read and re-read the manual and on-line instructions in the forum.  Tried multiple times to install but the device is not cooperating.  PC and UFX are not "playing nice".  I fear that I may have a mismatch in driver vs. firmware based on upgrading in the wrong sequence, but I'm not sure.

My initial install of the firewire drivers worked fine and I was able to work on my projects without any problems since I bought the unit some months ago, until just yesterday when I finally decided to perform the driver and firmware update.  Very stupid of me to do this in the middle of a project.

My dilemma is that I must turn the project today (within the next 4 hours).  The good news is that I'm almost done with it.  All I need to finish is the mastering.  So if I can get the UFX working within the next few hours I should be fine.

QUESTIONS:  Has anyone out there experienced the same thing?  Is there a way to perform a clean install of all the SW and drivers once again?  I don't mind reverting to the old firmware and SW to get it to work.

Here is my data:
Project:  I work using the Firewire port.
PC: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit  i7 950  12Gb RAM
UFX:  SW 1.44  running
Driver date: 21/03/11
Driver version: 3.044
Hardware Revision: 3.40

Problem/Symptoms:
*My current project has 15 virtual instruments and approx. 20 plugins running but CPU usage is well below 25%.
*Everything worked fine with this same project when I was running the old firmware and drivers.

*Current buffer size (latency) I'm running is 64 Samples but I've tried the entire range from 48 to 1024 and still no luck getting it to work.
*I'm experiencing considerable dropouts and loss of audio quality.
*I am therefore unable to complete my project.

Any help you can lend in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jose

Sorry cannot help with your specific set up other than to say I would just roll back the update.
I have had a couple of RME Firefaces over the years and personally I have had a great deal of problems with them - so much so that they are both reduced to back up units. Very unreliable and one of the things I always had problems with were software updates that gave problems! Seems things may not have improved much....

    Hi Jose,

I just bought the UFX (and run X1c on an i7 3930K) and am having similar issues although managed to somewhat stabilize things with a latency of 12ms at a buffer of 512 samples. I'm still getting drop-outs every 5 seconds though. All background services are disabled and the PC is 'optimized' as much as possible.

Did you get everything working in the end? If so, would you mind sharing what you did to get things running? Your success may be a breakthrough as there are a few X1 and X2 users out there (on the RME forums also) who are still struggling with things.

Anyhow Jose, any advice would be appreciated. I'm ready to send the UFX back as I'm so completely frustrated.

    All the best

I'm thinking Jose's urgent help from Nov 2011 may have been addressed.
Particularly since his most recent post was 2 years ago.

    Hi Jeff,

This is precisely why I'm asking Jose if he wouldn't mind sharing what was done to resolve his issues.

the PC is 'optimized' as much as possible
You sure that's not the problem? "optimized" I mean...
    USB or Firewire?
You want to be sure that the USB port is not "shared", and not USB3.
If using firewire, is it the MB or a card? PCI card? could be a problem depending on the MB.
My UFX rocks, but I haven't messed with the firmware or the driver.
    I'm using USB.

Simple, do not use Firewire, unless you can get ahold of the legacy driver from Windows 7 and who knows what you are on?
Use USB and upgrading drivers with the new install is easy, and firmware is done first with the other file downloaded from RME.
And RME has a forum to help answer your question also.
Just make sure in Control Panel -> Programs and Features that the old drivers are un-installed if any are listed, and if you installed the new drivers without un-installing the old drivers then un-install them both and start over, or even better yet (this has been happening with graphics driver also where people leave in old drivers not doing a clean install). Take out your RME unit in Device Manager (un-install it - delete it) when Windows start up, it may try and put in drivers for it if you have old ones in your computer - if it does, delete them, and restart the computer everytime, until Windows does not try and install any drivers for your RME unit.

Then update the firmware by runing the program - it will tell you if it needs to be updated, and follow the instructions over at the RME place where the drivers are downloaded and the firmware driver, and probably restart your computer when the firmware is installed (unplug the unit from the USB port for a couple of seconds and then plug it back in - I don't even think you have to restart the computer at that) and then install the drivers with the install program now.

With the new drivers there is not much you can do wrong, but firmware is always first and drivers always second and you can always check the firmware by running the fut whatever program to see if it is the latest firmware.
