Real round trip on Audiobox VSL?
I want to try a USB I/O box with my laptop and the Presonus Audiobox VSL 1818 looks like something I'd like. I know a little bit about the RME usb stuff but it's priced much higher. I use MOTU 896HDs with firewire on a desktop and I've been using a Traveler on my laptop. The firewire on my previous laptop was better than this one... etc. etc. I'm thinking about buying the 1818 but I wondering what the actual round trip latency is at the lowest sample buffer size that seems stable. Has anybody checked them out yet? best regards, mike

I've been reading a bit today and it seems like these Audiobox VSL units and Win7 seem to dislike each other below 128 samples. It also seems like the official reps at the manufacturers site have decided to say things like "people can't hear the difference between 128 and 64 sample buffers"... which to me seems like a turn off. I've gotten so used to my MOTUs at 64 samples that I can't imagine being told that I shouldn't regard it as useful. Seems like a deal killer. I really liked the layout of the actual box... but the more I learned about the drivers the less I was impressed with the overall package. At first I thought maybe someone that knew what's up with Windows might be able to reassure me that 64 is no problem. When I saw the response was more like "who cares?" I began to think that it must not be possible or someone would at least say something encouraging. Oh well, I guess I'm still dreaming about a nice USB interface that I can have some fun with. best regards, mike

Another USB I/O that does have good latency figures without the RME price tag is this one. It doesn't have the amount of I/O options as the Presonus box but I can vouch for its speed. http://www.rolandus.com/p...ils.php?ProductId=1127 I get down to 48 samples with the Quad for tracking but at 64 samples I can pretty much do anything and forget it's there. (oh, and you get X1 Studio thrown in if you buy before January... )

I was looking at that earlier. It seems nice. I didn't realize it had such nice low latency. I'm downloading the manual to learn if I can switch off auto sense. Thanks. best regards, mike

I'm looking at the 8 input Fast Track ultra now. I like the knob for each input and all the inputs are on the same side. I like the rack ears too. It's funny, my MOTU Traveler works real well... so what ever I find has to outperform it. The firewire on my current laptop scares me a bit so I'd like to phase out the Traveler. best regards, mike

Actually not to be snooty about the Roland autosense feature. Many people act strangely when you are trying to get a level, as you know they will often be more tentative than when they are in full flight performance. I've noticed I can engage the auto-sense button when I sense somebody is in full mode without telling them and end up nearer to the right ball-park. It only does anything when you tell it to otherwise you have complete manual control. The other thing about the Quad as opposed to the Octa is that if you only require a couple of ins and outs, being totally bus powered it is truly portable.

Thanks for the extra details. I think I have become enamored with the Fasttrack Ultra 8R. I want to avoid bus power as I generally regard power supplies as one of the most under appreciated part of the of the sound of a preamp. Thanks again, mike

I generally think of being mobile as having the ability to whip up a tune whilst on the beach, and the Ice Cream man doesn't normally allow me to take a power line from his generator... His Ice Cream sux anyway.

I read a bit about the M Audio Fast Track ulktra and ultra 8r power specs. The Ultra can be USB bus powered but only two mic preamps work when you do that. The Ultra uses a 5vAC 2amp power supply when you need everything to work. The Ultra 8r uses a 9vAC 3.5amp power supply. best regards, mike
