FM8 on the way!

I took advantage of their half price sale over the weekend, since FM8 was at the top of my list of virtual instruments I wanted. I've always loved FM synthesis. No, I'm not fond of the FM basses and digital sweeps and other weird stuff - I don't do dance music. I just love the variety of digital keyboards and bell-like sounds and such. My MIDI controller is still my old DX7II-FD, which is still working great and still sounds awesome. Back in the day, I got all the DX7II sound banks from Sound Source Unlimited - which took the DX7 to a whole new level. Anyway, I'm excited...

    Good for you Dapper!!
I also checked out/listening to the FM8 Demo's at the NI site and really do like their sounds.....I'm thinking of getting Komplete and be done with this piece-meal buying (I just don't know if I'd use all/most of them).

Did you ever try a Yamaha FS1r?  I wish they would make that into a plugin, it's FM on steriods.

I'm thinking of getting Komplete and be done with this piece-meal buying (I just don't know if I'd use all/most of them).
I had an incredible stroke of luck one day, while browsing Craigslist - Musical Instruments, and found a local producer who had bought Komplete 7 and then decided he didn't need it.  After checking with NI's support people and finding that the serial number had never been registered I bought it for $200.  Heck yeah!

The downside?  Now when I watch this forum I'll see remarks like "Hey!  Pluginmania.com has XXX.vst on sale for only $50!!"  I get excited, rush to the website and check out the software.  Play the demos.  Then say "uh, it sounds pretty much just like Reaktor (or Massive or FM8 or Absynth etc..).  Guess I'll pass."  Komplete has pretty big shoulders that leave very narrow gaps in coverage of synth technologies and sounds.  I don't mean that there aren't any goodies out there that I would love to own.  Nowadays the only virtual synth's that get me interested are typically quite expensive.  So I keep checking Craigslist in hopes of finding another buyers remorse special.

For future reference, NI will transfer licenses at no cost to either party.

First, it must be a media based products (stupid, but they will not transfer download products).

Second, the seller simply notifies NI (via email) the name and email address of the buyer. Doe not matter if the product was registered since NI then drops the product from the seller's account. The buyer simply registers and auths the product.

I have done this a number of times giving products previously purchased (and now in latest version) to my son. Of course, we trust each other so it goes flawlessly.

Since you got a really good deal on Craigslist, I also checked it out and found Komplete 8 for $200!!
Now, here's the catch.....and I'm quoting this guy:

Of course I emailed him and asked why he's not including the DVD's as well as how could I re-install if my PC dies on me.....+ I asked if this is a legit copy. I'll post when/if I hear back from him.

I have a funny feeling what his (non)-reply will be.

Native instruments is really good about transferring licenses.  There's an old economic theory that says it's better to keep your product installed in order to keep somebody else's from muscling in.  Cakewalk might want to consider doing the same.  That way an undecided customer who gets a good deal on a second hand install may just stay with Sonar rather than coughing up the extra money for another DAW.

Bapu:  The rest of the story......unfortunately my contact probably wasn't you.  I met the fellow in a (no kidding) Coney Island Hot Dogs parking lot.  He gave me the Komplete box.  I noticed that the shrink wrap was off.  I checked the disks and the owner's manual.  Oops!  The serial number strip was missing!  Sorry bud, no can close on the deal.  So we split up, he rushes back to his house and manages to find the serial number.  Calls my cell phone and reads it off to me.  I made sure to check that it was legit before making the 45-minute drive back to the hot dog place.  Everyone is happy.

You gotta caveat your emptor when you deal with Craigslist.  Seen some stories here lately of people going to meet someone to buy something and they don't come back.  Here in Houston a really bright guy advertised an expensive engagement ring on Craigslist.  An attractive couple come to his home to look at the ring.  Wow so shiny and big!  I'm going to my car to get my cash!  Be right back.......with a couple of my heavyweight buddies and my gun.  Bad deal that day you can bet.

Just for giggles and in case he didn't like the tone of my original email, I sent him an email from a different account.....

I pretended to be a naive teenager and used the word "like" in almost every other word. I asked him "like where's your studio at dude?" to see if he really has a legit studio.....which I doubt. (I should get some lessons from Bapu on how to be "hip" wit da kewl kids).

You got some very good points on dealing with people on Craigslist (I've also heard some horror stories). You were really lucky in getting a "legit" seller and a great price to boot.

Omnisphere and Nexus are among the synths that I would love to own.  Really premium packages.  Probably won't see them as $20 no-brainers or Craigslist specials anytime soon so I may have to wait.  But you never know.  I might hit the Lotto any day now!  Well, even then I will have to put new tires on my wife's car first.

Did you ever try a Yamaha FS1r?  I wish they would make that into a plugin, it's FM on steriods.

No, never tried one. Compared to a DX7, FM8 is also FM on steroids. More operators, more available waveforms, built-in FX. It does way more than my trusty old DX7II-FD.

I have an FS1r, it makes some really nice sounds, although I confess I haven't used it in years.  It's just to much trouble to record.  I got VST all the way.

I'm sure someone will turn it into a VST eventually though.

(an update from the guy on Craigslist and I'm quoting him)

"Well I Do Have The Original Disc..Do Keep In Mind That It Is 15 Dics's In Total For This Program That Cost Me $800 So I Figured I Can Share The Software And Registration With Fellow Producers Who May Not Be As Fortunate To Buy The Entire SoftWare..But I Do Own Everything And Every Software In My Studio Legitemely. And I Am A Las Vegas Resident..If Your Cpu Messes Up Then I Have No Problem ReInstalling For You..There Still Are Some Genuinely Good People In This Wold."

Looks like he's trying to make his money back in doing a side business and I called him out on that (on my reply). He didn't take my reply too well.
